Background information St. Petersburg is a very young city. Its foundation dates back to 1703. It was the capital of Russia in 1712-1918. St. Petersburg has always been the centre of public and cultural life. People call the city the Northern Capital of Russia. There are lots of things to see.

The Spit of Vasilievsky Island The Stock Exchange Building is the compositional centre of the Spit of Vasilievsky Island.. The famous Rostral Columns are designed by Thomas de Thomon. In 1826-1832 ware houses for storing the goods were installed.

Palace Square It is the central square of our city. Winter Palace was the winter residence for the royal family. It was built in 1754-1762 by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Alexander Column was built to the design of Auguste de Montferrand/. General Headquarters building was set up in 1819-1829.

St Isaac`s Cathedral It was designed by Auguste de Montferrand and built 40 years (1818-1858) It is the fourth church that bears the name of St Isaac. It is decorated with 112 monolithic columns. It took 16 years to decorate the interior of the cathedral

The Bronze Horseman It is one of the symbols of our city. It is the first monument in the city. It was designed by Etienne Falconet and Marie Anna Collot. It was opened on the 7th of August, 1782,on the 100 anniversary of the enthroning of Peter I.

The Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood It was built in 1883-1907 to the design of Alfred Parland It is an unusual structure in our city (mosaics)
