Green Charters will: be three year plans for promoting sustainability at school (local) level have clear aims or targets (measurable where appropriate) have information on delivery involve staff, pupils and the wider school community in planning the Charter be displayed clearly in schools be subject to ongoing review, progress being reported in Standards & Quality reports be submitted to the authority at the start of the three year period cover the essential components and several elective areas as well

The essential components for establishment Green Charters are as follows: Action on energy saving Action on recycling Action on litter Aiming for an Eco School Award at the appropriate level The elective areas are as follows: Water conservation School grounds work such as initiatives to enhance biodiversity Waste reduction Journey to school Going for Fair Trade School status Developing an environmental ‘Community Code’ Inverclyde School Green Charter Elements

In Kelly Street Children’s Centre we aim to: Decrease the number of cars being used to bring and collect children to and from nursery. Reduce the amount of energy we use. Reuse and recycle as much waste as possible within the nursery. Decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill from the local community. Reduce the amount of litter in the local environment. Gain second eco school award. Enhance the biodiversity within the local area.

Our Green Charter Action Plan Energy Reduction Turn down all radiators Switch off rather than standby equipment when not in use. Possibly purchase energy monitors On goingAll staff, children and parents ECO group to spot check that equipment is switched off etc. Recycling Rag bags every term Blue bins across both buildings Recycling visits to glass and carton bins – nursery to collect above from families Carrier bag bin at nursery Ink cartridge and battery bins at nursery Junk models to display in playground Junk model scarecrows for vegetable patch Junk plastic bottles – mini greenhouses On goingAll groups take charge of different collections on a monthly basis Each collection weighed before recycling Eco group display weights on eco notice board

Raising Awareness We wrote an eco song to help promote the green message and aid the children’s learning of our eco code. Eco school, eco school, Kelly Street’s an eco school. Paper, plastic, cans and tins. Put them in recycle bins. We’re all keen to be green, Kelly Street’s an eco school. Eco school, eco school, Kelly Streets an eco school. When you’re throwing rubbish out. Remember: kids in Kelly Street shout, “We’re all keen to be green, Kelly Street’s an eco school!”

So what can you do? Talk to your child about recycling and reducing waste! Come to our Green Charter Launch on Tues 23 rd Nov.! Subscribe to our email newsletter! Bring your poly bags, glass, batteries and waxed cartons to nursery for us to recycle. Get involved – join the eco group or volunteer to help with specific targets or events.
