Who Are We? UArctic is a cooperative network of 110 universities, colleges, and other organizations committed to higher education and research in the North. Our members share resources, facilities, and expertise to built post-secondary education programs that are relevant and accessible to northern students. Our overall goal is to create a strong, sustainable circumpolar region by empowering Northerners and northern communities through education and shared knowledge. We promote education that is circumpolar, interdisciplinary, and diverse in nature, and we draw on our combined strengths to address the unique challenges of the region. UArctic recognizes the integral role of indigenous peoples in northern education and seeks to engage their perspectives.

Our Programs : Knowledge and Dialogue Knowledge and Dialogue programs bring Northerners and their experiences together to generate new ideas and understandings that form the basis of UArctic’s education programs. Programs include: Northern Research Forum Thematic Networks Mimir – Research Outreach Program IPY Education and Outreach

Our Programs : Northern Research Forum The Northern Research Forum provides a platform for effective, policy-relevant discussion and the sharing of research on northern issues. Meetings are held biennially with the participation of a wide variety of scientists, policy makers and representatives of other stakeholders. The last meeting was held in October 2006 in Oulu and Tornio, Finland.

Our Programs : Thematic Networks The UArcticThematic Networks encourage faculty and institutional cooperation on subjects of shared interest among UArctic members. Eleven active Thematic Networks (2007): Verdde Thematic Network TN on Community-based Natural Resources and Co- management TN on Arctic Medicine TN on Arctic Agriculture and Nature Use TN on Global Change in the Arctic TN on Social Work TN on World Images of Indigenous Peoples of the North TN on Local and Regional Development in the North Arctic Learning Environment TN on Indigenous Arts and Crafts TN on Northern Governance

Our Programs : Mimir Mimir – Research Outreach Program seeks to ensure that Arctic research meets the needs of northern communities by ensuring that University of the Arctic members and their community partners are actively involved in northern research initiatives.

Our Programs: IPY Education and Outreach UArctic plays a key role in education and outreach during the International Polar Year (2007-2009), as the official provider and coordinator of IPY higher education and outreach activities. The UArctic IPY cluster is composed of 18 projects from various member institutions, ranging from scientific studies to curriculum development. Coordinated by the UArctic IPY Education and Outreach Program Office at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
