 Will buckwheat germinate better pre soaked in water then planted in soil or just planted in soil.

 Common name: Buckwheat  Scientific name: Fagopyrum esculentum  Plant family:Polygonaceae,  Where this plant is native: southeast Asia

 The typical growing/germination conditions for the seeds of this plant: It grows best in a cool, moist climate, and can germinate in a wide range of soil conditions.

 We predict that buckwheat will grow better just planted soil. and being pre soaked then put in soil wouldn’t grow as good as being in just soil.

Materials 1. 9 plastic cups to plant the seeds 2. 6 ounces of soil per cup 3. 6 plastic cups to soak the seeds 4. 5ml of water per seed 5. 27 buckwheat seeds

 Our experimental design: 1. We must take 3 buck wheat seeds put them in a cup with 5ml of water and let it soak for 12 hours. Then plant them in soil and water 3ml water a day until they germinate. 2. We must take the same amount of seeds and same amount of water in another cup and let it soak for 24 hours. then plant them in soil and water them 3ml water a day until germinate. 3. For our control group we will plant 3 seed of Buckwheat and put them in 6 ounces of soil, water them 3ml water a day until they germinate.

 dependent variables: amount of soil, amount of water, number of seeds  independent variables: how long we soak the seeds  Control group: we will plant buck wheat in soil and water it 3 ml of water a day.

 We accepted our hypothesis that buckwheat grows better in soil. and being pre soaked then put in soil wouldn’t grow as good as being in just soil. To determine weather buckwheat germinated better pre soaked or in just soil we decided to see which seed germinated faster. In the control group four out of nine seeds germinated in three days and the rest of the seeds germinated in 5 to 4 days.

The seeds soaked for a short amount of time only one seed germinated in 3 days, the other seeds germinated in 5 to 6 days. The seeds soaked for a long amount of time only one seed germinated in four days the rest germinated in 5 to 6 days

 Over all our experiment did go as we planed.  The only question we have is why didn’t buckwheat react to the water while it was being soaked?  If we could do over our experiment we would soak long and see if any thing different happens.
