The metamorphosis of a BUTTERFLY begins with… The Egg (Stage 1)
3
Stage 1: The Egg The mother butterfly lays an egg on a leaf The egg is the size of a pinhead It is sticky and attaches to the leaf It hatches into a caterpillar after a few days and eats the leaf
4
Next, comes the…. Larval Stage (Stage 2)
5
Stage 2: Larval This stage is also called the caterpillar stage The caterpillar’s job is to eat, and eat, and eat! It grows for 12 to 14 days until it is too big for its skin The caterpillar splits its skin and crawls out, this is called molting
6
The third stage of the butterfly lifecycle is called… The Pupa (Stage 3)
7
Stage 3: The Pupa In this stage, a chrysalis grows to protect the pupa The chrysalis attaches to a twig with a button of silk The pupa stage lasts for about one week
8
In the final stage, the butterfly becomes an… Adult (Stage 4)
9
Stage 4: The Adult The butterfly comes out of the chrysalis, damp and crumpled It hangs from its chrysalis and pumps blood into its wings It takes two hours to dry off and flies away
