When we talk about food, le/la/les (definite articles) mean “the” o J’aimerais la tartine I would like the bread with bread/jam. When we talk about food, un/une/des (indefinite articles) mean “a” or “an” (or all of a plural thing) o J’aimerais une banane I would like a banana. However, sometimes you don’t want to eat ALL of something! This is when we use the partitive. o J’aimerais la confiture I would like the jam o J’aimerais de la confiture I would like some jam

When you want to say “some” (as opposed to “all of” or “a/an”), use the partitive that matches in gender and number les oeufs des oeufs le jus de pomme du jus de pomme la baguette de la baguette les toasts des toasts le lait du lait la confiture de la confiture
