The Venturing Commissioner What is Venturing? The young adult program of the BSA for men and women 14 (who have completed the 8 th grade) through 20 years of age A youth member is a “Venturer” Venturing Units are “Crews (Ships)” Venturers within a Troop are “Venturing Patrols” Venturing adults are “Advisors (Skipper/Mates)” Youth leaders is the “President/Officer (Boatswain)” (Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer) Vision for Organizing a Unit – “Local Community Organizations establish a Venturing Unit by matching their members and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of exciting and meaningful activities that help youth pursue their unique interests, to grow in stature, to develop leadership skills, and become good citizens.

The Venturing Commissioner Venturing Uniform – No universal “official” uniform Recommended uniform: –Spruce green shirt –Green epaulets –Gray shorts or cargo pants Sea Scout – Normally White or Navy Uniform, if any, is the Crew’s (Ship’s) choice

The Venturing Commissioner Chartering Agreement – Program Inventory –List of hobbies, skills, careers, ideas for developing a Program Adult Leaders –Organize the Program Inventory for reference only –Serve “only” as Advisors Meeting Facilities Share in providing adult leadership, equipment, and recognition

The Venturing Commissioner Venturing Crew – Youth-Led Organization Recruit members Elects Officers Plans Program – Based upon the Program Inventory Adult Advisors – Provide training & Guidance for the Crew’s elected Officers

BSA Local Council – The Boy Scouts of America recruits adult volunteers and assigns professional staff members to provide the following services Venturing chartered organizations’ Crews/Ships To provide Commissioner support for those Units, much as BSA would provide Commissioner support for other BSA Units, except in a different manner based upon the unique structure of the Venturing Unit.
