1. Back to School Night September 18, 2014

3. Welcome! Labels: please label all personal items. Money: any money brought to school should be put in an envelope labeled with your child’s name, amount, and purpose. Lunch: Please try to discuss the menu options with your child before they arrive at school. They should know if they are buying and what they are buying. Folders: Please check nightly. Leave home papers should be left at home. Return to school papers should be retuned to school. Any other correspondence (notes, money envelopes, etc.) should be carried to school in the folder.

4. Homework: will travel back and forth to school in the folder. We usually have two items for homework: one language and one math. Please sign to acknowledge that you saw it and return to school. Book Bag: carries books home that the student chose from the classroom library or the teacher put in the bag for practice and sharing at home. Reading Log: log sent home weekly to indicate what books are being read at home. Dismissal: Please indicate in writing if your child’s dismissal routine changes. Special Subject Areas: We have our specials at the end of the day. Birthdays: we love to take time to celebrate birthdays. Each child will get to wear a crown and sticker. We will sing a song and play a game. Each child will receive a small gift from the teacher. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in June.

5. Newsletter: “Second Grade News” arrives each week. Look for updates on subject content and any new information about class and activities. Behavior Guidelines: rules were written cooperatively with the class. The class has the opportunity to earn individual as well as whole class awards. Water Bottles: each child is permitted to keep a water bottle on his/her desk. This keeps your child hydrated and cuts down on germs at the water fountain. Please no juice, soda, or milk.

6. Mini Lesson Each Reading Workshop session will begin with a mini lesson that lasts approximately 10-15 minutes. During each mini lesson, the teacher will introduce a specific concept, also known as the teaching point. Most often the teaching point will focus on a reading strategy or skill. The teacher will explicitly model or demonstrate the skill for the students. Students then get a chance to practice the skill or strategy on their own or with a partner. This part of the mini-lesson is called the active engagement.

7. Independent Reading During this time students are engaged in self- selected texts at their independent level. They use this time to practice the skill that was taught during the mini- lesson. Students are reading in book nooks around the room while the teacher holds individual reading conferences or meets with small groups of students for guided reading, strategy lessons, or book clubs

8. Closing We taught you this … now go to your book and apply. Come back to share how you’ve applied it. During this time the class might: Meet as a whole group to refer back to the mini-lesson and think further Meet together to think about and respond to questions such as: What did you learn about reading today? What did you learn about yourself as a reader? Meet with reading partners to have a quick chat about how the reading is going

9. Fundations Wilson Fundations for K-3 is a phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling program for the general education classroom. Fundations lesson focus on carefully sequenced skills that include print knowledge, alphabet awareness, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and spelling.

10. Everyday Math Everyday Mathematics, children develop a broad background by learning concepts and skills within the core standards. Number and Numeration Operations and Computation Data and Chance Measurement and Reference Frames Geometry Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

11. Grammar The Fundamentals of Grammar and Conventions Lessons will be incorporated into our writing block.

12. Technology Computers I-pads Responders Nooks

13. Science Solids and Liquids Pebbles, Sand and Silt Insects Units are hands on experiment based. Students have the opportunity to explore, observe and record their findings.
