DISCUSSION 1 PUBHLTH 350 Mendeley nutrition experiment September 17 and 18, 2015

Mendeley Download and install http://www.mendeley.comhttp://www.mendeley.com

Need help with citations? http://www.lib.umich.edu/knowledge-navigation-center

Create a drop folder On your computer desktop (or wherever) create folder “Mendeley drop”

Load up Mendeley Add watch folder – use the folder you just created! (Mendeley drop) (click All Documents on the left before going into this menu) Be sure to check mark the watch folder, don’t just click the name.

Add citation styles

Search for AMA Click on “Get more styles” tab Search for American Medical Association Click on it to install!

Connect to MS Word You’ll have to temporarily close out of MS Word.

Add a PDF of an article to your Mendeley drop folder Example article: the nutrition article found in Canvas Discussion Week 7.

Find the article in Mendeley

Manually fill in info Mendeley usually can fill in most fields no problem More of a problem with older articles and obscure journals Sometimes if you hit “Search” at the top in the yellow bar it’ll magically fill in

Adding in sources without a PDF Examples: books, websites, reports, etc. Or do: File  Add entry manually

Example: add in web page Title: WHO child growth standards Authors: World Health Organization [make sure to click on Institution/Organization otherwise Mendeley formats it as a person’s name] Website: http://www.who.int/childgrowth/en/ http://www.who.int/childgrowth/en/ Year: 2014 Date Accessed: (Today) Note: You do not need to fill in every field. The fields “Abstract”, “Tags” “Author Keywords”, etc. are notes you can make for yourself, they do not appear in any citations.

Cite in Word Use the Mendeley citation button, not the default MS Word one Macs: View  Toolbars  Mendeley Toolbar (if not already above your document) Mac Windows 2008: Scroll thing on the top menu

Add in the citation You can search for the journal article by author, title, journal name, etc.

Change citation style The default is APA. Let’s switch it to AMA.

Add in a bibliography at the end of your document

Before submitting your document Click refresh! (if you have been moving things around in your document, it won’t always update the order manually)

Mendeley + other word processors Unfortunately, Mendeley plug-ins for other word processors are not available You can still use Mendeley to format the works cited at the end of the document. Make sure AMA is checked (in Mendeley: View  citation style  AMA) On the citation you are citing, right click  Copy As  Formatted Citation Paste at the end of your document. Be sure to put these in a numbered list For in-text citations, you still have to use superscripts after the sentence period. Other software, like EndNote may work with some word processors.
