PSI Materials Repository S torage and distribution of materials generated by PSI centers PSI Materials Repository S torage and distribution of materials generated by PSI centers
2
Setting Up a Materials Repository Centralize materials, remove burden of storage and distribution from PSI Centers, provide public access to materials Scope and need Priorities - what to store Clones, plasmids, vectors, expression strains, protein purification protocols, assay systems, purified proteins, crystals…. Information Access, quality control, sample characterization, tracking, storage, expansion Access, quality control, sample characterization, tracking, storage, expansion Demand for samples Demand for samples Models for Materials Repository NIGMS Human Genetic Cell Repository (since 1972) NIGMS Human Genetic Cell Repository (since 1972) Contract; stores cell lines; handles distribution ATCC – contracts for NIH materials, cell lines, specimens Other examples at NIH

Feedback Advice from PSI Centers, Advisory Committee, Potential Users Following March 2002 PSI Protein Production Mtg Need for repository? Number of requests per year? Items to be stored? No consensus – too early Responses mixed yes/no to idea of repository Information alone may be sufficient Centralized repository vs storage/distribution of materials from Centers Few requests for materials in 2002; in 2003, 0 - 500 samples distributed per Center Concerns about loss of quality control at central facility & information transfer

Interim Plan Set up distribution at each Center now: Set up distribution at each Center now: September 2003 supplement awards; ~$50K DC Support archiving, storage and distribution (technician, supplies) Continue through pilot phase; possible transfer to central facility later Interim plan to explore needs, issues & management Interim plan to explore needs, issues & management Centers share reagent information Centers share reagent information PEPCdb: Protein Expression, Purification and Crystallization Database Cloning, expression and purification protocols; contact info Revisit need for repository Prior to end of pilot phase – early 2005 Information (PEPCdb) enough? Set up contract for repository to store materials? Continue storage/distribution from Centers?
