Thesis Statement “Retailers defend the approach to hiring based on image as necessary and smart, and industry experts see the point. ‘In today’s competitive retail environment, the methods have changed for capturing the consumer’s awareness of brand,” said Marshal Cohen, a senior industry analyst with the NPD Group, a market research firm. “Being able to find a brand enhancer, or what I call a walking billboard, is critical. It’s really important to create an environment that’s enticing to the community, particularly with the younger, fashionable market. A guy wants to go hang out in a store where he can see good looking gals.” Explain Cohen’s argument and discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with his analysis. Support your position, providing reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

(For non-print sources, such as films, TV series, pictures, or other media, or electronic sources, include the name that begins the entry in the Works Cited page). 11 Tense Generally speaking, you should write in the present tense when discussing literature. When an event takes place in the historical past or outside the time frame of the story, then you would use the past tense. This is not tense-switching, but necessary (although sometimes awkward!).

Tense Historical past tense Hawthorne published The Scarlet Letter in 1850. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was one of the founders of the early feminist movement.

Tense Literary present tense Hawthorne describes Hester and Pearl in vivid detail. Hester refuses to identify the father of her child. In "The Declaration of Sentiments," Stanton and her co-authors argue that equality should apply to women as well as men.

Tense Outside the frame of the story (past tense) Hester was born in England and arrived in America as an adult.

No – No words Do not use 2 nd person (you) Avoid contractions (don’t, couldn’t) Do not use “A lot” Avoid slang unless using a direct quotation Do not use profanity
