Workshop 5: Adults Key questions: What measures are needed at both EU and national levels to raise awareness of literacy problems among adults? What can done to break the stigma of adult illiteracy, and provide individuals seeking help with specialized support and guidance, and programmes tailored to their needs? In respect of any good examples of adult literacy courses/training in your country, what factors contribute most to their success? What are the main outcomes of these courses/training for individuals and for the local community?

Workshop 5: Adults How can we raise the awareness of employers of the importance and benefits of promoting literacy courses/training for employees and encourage them to take responsibility for the literacy of their employees and give them access to high-quality literacy training? Workshop 5: Adults Social and civic participation are more literacy-dependent in the digital world The labour market requires ever higher literacy skills (it is estimated that, by 2020, 35% of all jobs will require high- level qualifications, compared to 29% today) About 73m adults in Europe have low- level qualifications

Preconditions for success: A literate environment The primary objective is to increase literacy motivation and engagement: Capitalise on the motivating power of digital literacy Make it simpler for adults to access support For parents, expand and support family literacy programmes

Preconditions for success: Quality of Teaching Raise the professional profile of adult literacy teachers by providing tailored initial and continuing pedagogical training, good career prospects and adequate remuneration Design curricula and assessment methods sensitive to the needs of adult learners Support volunteers

Preconditions for success: Quality of Teaching Ensure curricula and pedagogy draw on research - And do the work to expand the inadequate research base Relate programmes for adults to their daily lives and needs for civic participation and employment Provide workplace literacy programmes at times convenient for employees Ensure programmes are intensive and/or long enough to make a real difference

Preconditions for success: Participation and Inclusion Closing the social and digital gaps: Access to high-quality and free adult literacy programmes Routine data-gathering to assess need, plan strategies, and measure progress Specialist initiatives for disaffected young adults and offenders with poor literacy Language training for migrants
