4. Community Profile Vernon was first settled in 1716 and was incorporated as a town in 1808. Founded at the start of the Industrial Revolution, the town developed into a major center for the manufacture of textiles. Vernon is a suburban community rich in historical and cultural tradition. The town is 15 miles to the northeast of Hartford and is equidistant between New York and Boston. Today the Rockville section of Vernon enjoys the unique status of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although many of the mills are gone, the area remains an active urban center. Once known as rural Vernon, it is now best described as a suburb of Hartford and part of the Tri- Town area of Vernon, Ellington, and Tolland. Although rural areas still exist, Vernon today has a population of over 30,000 residents living in over 13,000 housing units.

The Position Vernon Public Schools is seeking outstanding candidates for the administrative position of Director of Business and Finance to administer and evaluate all facets of school district management, including fiscal services, benefits, transportation, food service, risk management, security, and facilities in order to provide the best educational services possible within the financial resources of the district.

Policy is governed by the Vernon Board of Education, a nine-member elected body. The Director of Business and Finance reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools. The operating budget for the 2011-2012 is $47,462,358.
