Complete the provided worksheet as you read Lessons 24 and 25 in your Student Manual over Values and Standards. Make sure you write your responses IN COMPLETE SENTENCES where needed, and in many of the situations, a small paragraph is necessary in order to FULLY EXPLAIN. Make sure that your writing is legible. These worksheets will be collected. Be ready to discuss the ideas presented once everyone has finished and we proceed through our lesson. If you finish early, do something SILENT until we are ready to move on. Student Manual Reading and Worksheet

The things we have learned so far in this course all revolve around the SKILLS a person needs to effectively lead, as well as to be successful in everyday life situations. These skills have been the “HOW TO’S” of life. But in order to truly grow as people and lead even more successful lives, we must look beyond the skills…look a bit deeper in ourselves. Leadership

Values are statements about what we stand for and what is important to us. Values measure who we really are. Values give us direction to everything we do; they are the basis for every decision we make, every action we take. CORE VALUES are the values in our lives that are ABSOLUTE. These tend to be unchanging. Core values often include: treating others as you would like to be treated, putting family first, telling the truth, etc. What are values?

On page 42 in your manual, record the following: 1.The Way We Spend Our Time - (Example: if a parent says he values his children, one would expect him to come home and actually spend time with them, but if the first thing he does when he gets home every night is to sit down, turn on the T.V. and ignore his kids…then perhaps he doesn’t really value his children). 2.The Way We Spend Our Money – (Example: If a person says he cares about the poor, one would expect him to donate money or resources, but if his checkbook doesn’t show that he gives to charity, etc. then maybe he doesn’t really care about the poor as much as he thinks). 3.The Way We Treat Other People – (Example: If a person says he loves his family, one would expect him to treat his family with love, care, and respect, but if he comes home every night and yells at, or abuses his wife and children, then he doesn’t really love and value his family). How Do We Demonstrate Our Values?

VALUE CONFLICT occurs when you are not sure about what YOU believe or want. It may also occur when you aren’t clear which of your values is more critical in a situation. The clearer your values are to you and the more you can recognize and respect what others value, the easier it is to deal with conflict situations. Therefore, we must begin to know our individual values and live according to them. If we don’t live up to our values, what does this say about us? Are we hypocrites? Phonies?

What do you suppose the term “moments of truth” means? Moments of truth are like windows into your real motives. They are situations where you have choices. We can see who you really are by looking at the choices you make in that situation. Example: A moment of truth situation might be when you find a wallet loaded with money and credit cards that someone has lost. Your decision about what to do with the wallet is the window into who you really are. Other moments of truth situations: speaking up for a friend; spending time with family versus going out with friends, etc. Moments of Truth

If values are to be of worth, they must be taken seriously. It is not what we say, but rather it is what we do! What you do speaks louder than what you say! We are surrounded by people in our society that “break rules.” Coaches break recruiting rules, people and businesses lie about taxes, students cheat, people do drugs, and politicians make empty promises. Each of these situations is an expression of someone’s values. Are we letting our own value system be impacted by the behavior and attitudes of those around us or is OUR value system directed by our ability to be true to ourselves and what we believe? THIS IS OUR CHALLENGE! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNXwKGZHmDc

When we talk about STANDARDS we are referring to the way we measure behavior…what is and what is not ok to do. What do we base our decisions on? What is the basis for our lives? Psychology teaches us that behavior is need-motivated. We do things driven by the needs that motivate us. However, what determines the TYPE of behavior we use to meet our needs? STANDARDS STANDARDS

What is MORAL RELATIVISM? This is the idea that moral standards are too strict for us to use in modern society and we should decide each issue based on the situation itself. This is a seemingly harmless thought. But in reality, that kind of thinking has resulted in some unhealthy attitudes and actions. (Example…what “feels good” to some people is considered offensive, dangerous, violent, etc.). This is where standards fall into place. Without a standard, our values can go up and down, making it harder and harder to know right from wrong. In fact, many behaviors that used to be wrong are now either tolerated or are completely accepted. Can you think of some things that used to be considered “wrong” that are now thought to be acceptable behaviors?

Our actions speak louder than our words. What would you do? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1r2GF7ovL0 Show Don’t Tell

CHOICE OF TOPICS FOR THIS JOURNAL – Choose one of the following prompts and write your response. Remember, it must AT LEAST be a paragraph long, and make sure to elaborate and explain your ideas. Write about an incident in your life where you had to make a tough choice that said something about what you valued. It can be about a situation where you succeeded or where you messed up. You choose. OR How do you decide what is right or wrong in your life? Try to identify specific criteria you use in determining whether something is right or wrong…whether something is okay or not okay for you to do. Journal
