STORAGE OF MEDICATIONS AND NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS

PURPOSE / POLICY PURPOSE: To ensure that meds and nutritional therapy solutions are properly handled and stored POLICY: The home health nurse will be responsible for instructing the patient and family/caregiver regarding the safe storage of medications (defined both in terms of patient’s safety and protection from damage of heat, sun, etc.)

PROCEDURE nurse will encourage patients and or caregivers of the following: ◦All meds and/or chemicals should be labeled for contents, with expirations clearly identified ◦Meds/nutritional therapy will be stored under conditions that enhance stability; elements to consider are: Storage temperatures Contamination and spoilage Controlling lighting, ventilation and humidity Prevention of moisture, condensation, and mold Thorough cleaning and sanitizing of all surfaces, supplies and equipment after each use

PROCEDURE CONTINUED The home health nurse will plan with the patient and family/caregiver for the safe therapeutic storage of drugs in the home. Consideration will be given to the following: ◦Meds should be stored separately from other poisonous drugs/chemicals ◦Kept from children’s/pets/confused patient’s reach ◦Proper refrigeration of indicated ◦Urine testing and other diagnostic materials stored away from all meds, heat, light and moisture
