Cylinders and Cones Unit 12 Section 3 Identify the parts of cylinders and cones Find the lateral areas, total areas, and volumes of right cylinders and right cones
2
Cylinders h r Cylinders: like prisms except that bases are circles instead of polygons Right cylinder Oblique cylinder In right cylinders, the segment joining the centers of the circular bases is an altitude. The length of the altitude is called the height, h The radius of the base is also called a radius, r Formulas LA = 2 п rh TA = 2 п rh + 2 п r ² V = п r ² h
3
Cones h r Cone: like pyramid except that base are circles instead of polygons Right cone Oblique cone In right cone, the segment joining the point to the center of the circular base is an altitude. The length of the altitude is called the height, h The radius of the base is also called a radius, r Formulas LA = п rl TA = п rl+ п r ² V = ½п r ² h Slant height, l Slant height applies only to a regular pyramid and a right cone
