10 Sound Devices Repetition – a sound, word, phrase, or line that is repeated for emphasis and unity Alliteration – the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words Consonance – the repetition of consonant sounds within and at the ends of words Assonance – the repetition of vowel sounds in words that do not end with the same consonant

12 These are all examples of figurative language. Figurative language is used to create imagery – the appeal to sound, smell, taste, touch, sight.

13 Other Terms to Know Paraphrase – Translate the poem into your own words. Connotation – Examine the poem beyond its literal meaning. Connotation is how the words are perceived, not what they literally mean. Diction – What is the purpose of the poet’s word choice? Attitude – What is the poet’s or the speaker’s attitude toward the subject. This is also referred to as TONE. Shift – The attitude of the speaker or poet changes within the poem. Theme-What is the overall message of the poem?
