7 American Realism (1865-1918) Manifestations: Railroads tripled; Petroleum was discovered; Half the population in the east lived in towns; Movement away from the farm became obvious. Increasing industrialization and mechanization,in full swing after the civil war, soon produced extremes of wealth and poverty.

Now they became dominant in the social and economic life of the nation. The spirit of self-reliance that Emerson had preached became perverted into admiration for driving ambition, a lust for money and power.

35 James ’ preference He enjoyed juxtaposing American moral innocence with the somber decadence of Europe, in other words, American innocence caught in the toils of European duplicity. James ’ fictional world is peopled almost always by American heroes and heroines who confronting European sophistication, either triumph over it or are overwhelmed. In his works, James stresses mutual undertanding and sympathy.
