WHAT IS AN ARCHETYPE? a very typical example of a certain person or thing a recurrent symbol or motif it can be applied to an image, theme, idea, plot pattern, or character type it can be expressed in myths, dreams, literature, religions, fantasies, and folklore examples: The Hero’s Journey, “star-crossed lovers,” nature vs. mechanistic world, Type A/B personalities (or the more specific ones we explored during our last class)

5. THE FLOOD ARCHETYPE results from man putting childhood behind him, inventing evil, and discovering death man slides so far away from his original self that the gods think annihilation is more effective than salvage water destroys and saves; it takes and gives life

6. THE FLOOD ARCHETYPE This archetype illustrates: – an apocalyptic image – the concept of death-rebirth cycle – mankind’s second chance after devastating loss (the great lesson) – that destruction and creation are inseparable
