1 Identifying Purpose Why are you writing? (C) FreeWritingWorksheets.com

2 Four purposes of writing There are four reasons to write: 1.To tell the reader a story. 2.To describe something to the reader. 3.To explain something to the reader. 4.To persuade or convince the reader to do something. (C) FreeWritingWorksheets.com

3 Narrative writing Writing to tell a story is narrative writing. Example: I’m not sure who saw the bee first, but everybody seemed to start yelling at the same time. Some students dove under their desks. The bravest kids went after it with books, papers, and shoes. The whole thing ended when the bee finally used its brain and flew out the window. 4 Descriptive writing Writing to describe is descriptive writing. Example: A bee hive hung from the lowest branch of the tree, swaying slightly in the breeze. The enticing smell of honey wafted off of it, but the warning hum of the bees inside kept hungry predators away. (C) FreeWritingWorksheets.com

5 Expository Writing Writing to explain is called expository writing. Example: Treating a bee sting is simple. First, gently remove the stinger with tweezers. Next, apply Neosporin or another antibiotic ointment. If the sting is very painful, you can spray a numbing agent like Dermoplast onto it. Then, just cover the sting with a bandage! 6 Persuasive Writing Writing to persuade or convince someone is called persuasive writing. Example: Many people think that if you find a beehive near your house, you should destroy it, but they are wrong! Not only do bees help pollinate your plants, they also provide delicious honey and useful wax. Even bee venom has been proved to help arthritis! (C) FreeWritingWorksheets.com
