T EXTILES C ONSUMER A basic knowledge of fabrics can help you make better clothing choices. Clothes & house wares can be made from natural fibers or synthetic fibers. Natural fiber Fibers, such as cotton, linen, silk, and wool, which are made from plant and animal products. Synthetic (Manufactured) fiber Fibers, such as rayon, nylon, and polyester, which are made from manufactured substances.

Fiber - hair like substances that are twisted together to make yarns and fabric natural fiber - Comes from plants or animals proteins. synthetic fiber – manufactured from chemicals & other raw materials. Blend - Two or more fibers combined to create a fabric. Grain - The direction the threads run in a fabric. Finish – A treatment given to fibers, yarns or fabrics to improve the look, feel, or performance of fabric. Bonded(Non-Woven) Fabric - Fibers are mechanically or chemically joined together with steam or heat used with an adhesive strategy. knit fabric - looping yarns together Woven fabric – The process of interlacing yarns at right angels to each other to produce a fabric. Plain Weave Twill Weave Satin Weave

R ECOGNIZE Q UALITY F ABRICS A basic knowledge of fabrics can help you make better clothing choices. Clothes can be made from natural fibers or synthetic fibers. natural fiber Fibers, such as cotton, linen, silk, and wool, which are made from plant and animal products. synthetic fiber Fibers, such as rayon, nylon, and polyester, which are made from manufactured substances.

R ECOGNIZE Q UALITY F ABRICS A blend is two or more fibers combined. blend Two or more fibers combined to create a fabric. fiber A tiny strand or thread, many of which combine to make fabric.

R ECOGNIZING Q UALITY F ABRICS Fabrics can be made by weaving, knitting or bonded(non-woven) fibers together. All fabrics have a grain. Finishes can be added to improve the durability of fabrics. grain The direction the threads run in a fabric.

T EXTILE C ONSUMERS A basic understanding of fabrics can help you make better consumer choices. Fabrics are made from natural or synthetic materials. Fabrics are made by weaving, knitting, or bonding(non-woven) fibers together. Manufacturers may add finishes to improve the durability and feel of fabrics.

N ATURE F IBERS Cotton- most widely used. Comes from the cotton plant- Characteristics: aborts moisture, strong, easy to launder, and dyes well. Linen- Comes from the Flax plant. Characteristics: strong, wrinkles easily. Poplar to be treaded with wrinkle resistant finish. Ramie- Comes from the stalks of shrub like plant Ramie, also called China Grass.. Grown mainly in Southwest Asia. Strong, yet wrinkle easily. Often combined with other fibers to reduce wrinkling. Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies

M ORE N ATURE F IBERS Wool- Made from the fleece of sheep. Valued for its warmth. Does not wrinkle. Asorbs water, so it must be dry cleaned. Can be damaged by insects like moths and Silk – Spun by silkworms. Strongest of nature fibers. Drapes well and can be dyed with bright colors. It absorbs water. Usually must be dry cleaned. Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies

M ANUFACTURED F IBERS Acetate- High luster(shine) used to wear formal wear and as lining of fabric. Does not wear well. Weak fiber. Acrylic – Know form warmth without weight. Can be woven or knitted. Machine washable, but will pill. Nylon- Strength and durability. Repel water, Used for clothing and various commercial uses: example. Tire, hosiery, carpet Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies

A DDITIONAL M ANUFACTURED F IBERS Polyester- Most popular manufactured fibers. Used alone or mixed with cotton to make easy care shirts, pants, tablecloths. It stays fluffy even when wet. Rayon-The first manufactured fiber, used in a variety of clothing, and household items. Spandex- High performance fiber, stretches and recovers to original shape. Used in elastics Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies

F ABRIC F INISHES Finishes change the nature characteristics of fabrics- to make them more useful(appealing) and durable. Color- Add or change the color Flame-retardant- resist burning Permanent press- Requires little or no ironing after washing. Stain-resistant- Helps fabric resist stains. Water-repellent- Helps fabric resist water, but not shed it completely. Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies

Y OUR T ASK I Meet in your appoint and share what you hear in class discussion and saw in power point regarding. Fabrics, fibers, and yarns. Then write summary of what you heard and saw today.
