Chemical reactions taking place in biological systems - animals and plants are called biochemical reactions. They follow all the laws of chemistry but are generally very fast and more efficient than reactions done in lab.
5
When an acid reacts with a base to produce a salt and water. acid + base H 2 O + ionic salt (H + ) (OH - ) Ex. Buffers: Living organisms function properly in a very small pH range. Buffers are chemicals that either take up or release H + or OH - ions to maintain a constant pH.
6
Two or more monomers join together to form a polymer and water.
7
Reduction Reaction: a gain of electrons. Ex. O + 2e - O -2 Oxidation Reaction: a loss of electrons. Ex. Mg Mg +2 + 2e- Redox Reaction: An oxidation and a reduction reaction occur at the same time.
8
The addition of water breaks a polymer into its monomers.
9
Transamination is the transfer of amino group from one molecule to another
10
In this type of reaction removal of amine group takes place
11
Decarboxylation is a reaction that removes a carboxyl group and releases carbon dioxide (CO 2 )
