Chemical reactions taking place in biological systems - animals and plants are called biochemical reactions. They follow all the laws of chemistry but are generally very fast and more efficient than reactions done in lab.

When an acid reacts with a base to produce a salt and water. acid + base  H 2 O + ionic salt (H + ) (OH - ) Ex. Buffers: Living organisms function properly in a very small pH range. Buffers are chemicals that either take up or release H + or OH - ions to maintain a constant pH.

Two or more monomers join together to form a polymer and water.

Reduction Reaction: a gain of electrons. Ex. O + 2e -  O -2 Oxidation Reaction: a loss of electrons. Ex. Mg  Mg +2 + 2e- Redox Reaction: An oxidation and a reduction reaction occur at the same time.

The addition of water breaks a polymer into its monomers.

Transamination is the transfer of amino group from one molecule to another

In this type of reaction removal of amine group takes place

Decarboxylation is a reaction that removes a carboxyl group and releases carbon dioxide (CO 2 )
