6:1 ● Nativism ● Extreme dislike of immigrants by native-born people ● Aimed at Irish in 1840's ● Aimed at Asians, Jews, and Eastern Europeans in late-1800's

6:1 ● Nativists feared: ● Catholics ● Immigrants would take jobs from Americans ● Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) ● Barred Chinese immigration for 10 years ● Chinese in the country could not become citizens ● Literacy Tests ● Must be literate enough to enter the country ● Used to keep out most Eastern Europeans
