 What do we know about electricity?  Write down 5 VIP’s while watching this video.  Electricity: A First Look Electricity: A First Look

 Electricity is a form of energy that can cause change and be changed into other forms of energy.

 Light- Electrical energy can be changed into light energy with light bulbs in lamps, computer monitors, televisions, etc.  Heat- Electrical energy can be changed into heat energy in toasters, stoves and ovens.  Sound- Electrical energy can be changed into sound energy in televisions and radios. Another example of this would be a doorbell ringing.

Draw this in your Science Notebook and label the type of energy that is created when electricity is added to these items.

 A complete circuit is a closed path through which electricity flows. Draw the symbols for the following components of circuits:  -The wire ( ) conducts the electric current (the flow of electricity.  - The switch ( ) completes the circuit and allows current to flow if closed and stops the current if open.  - The battery ( ) pushes the electric current around the circuit.  - The light bulb ( ) the object in the circuit that changes the electrical energy to light energy.

 How can you get electricity from a source to a receiver? How does electricity flow through a circuit?  FOSS Magnetism and Electricity Kit: Investigation 2:Part 1 Lighting a Bulb: Pages 4 – 13

 SCIENCE NOTEBOOK: Complete the following.  Explain how you got the bulb to light using just one wire.

 Let’s illustrate on the SMART board how we got the bulb to light in our last investigation.

 What does a switch do in a circuit?  FOSS Magnetism and Electricity Kit: Investigation 2:Part 2: Making a Motor Run: Pages 14 - 19

 Notebook Connection: Explain the difference between an open and a closed circuit. Make a drawing and label the parts.

 Conductors  -Conductors allow electricity to flow through them in an electric circuit.  -If a bulb stays lit when an object is added to an electric circuit, it is a conductor because the material is conducting the current through the circuit.  -Metals are conductors of electricity. Examples- Paper clips, pennies, copper wire, silver spoons or screws would all complete a circuit and conduct electricity.

 Insulators  -Insulators do not all electricity to flow through them in an electric circuit.  -If a bulb does not stay lit when an object is added to an electric circuit, it is an insulator because the current cannot go through it to complete the circuit.  -Plastics and wood are examples of insulators. Think of rubber gloves, pot holders, etc. as insulators as well. They keep heat and electricity from harming us by insulating the electricity or heat energy.

 What is the difference between an insulator and a conductor?  FOSS Magnetism and Electricity Kit: Investigation 2:Part 3: Finding Conductors and Insulators: Pages 20 - 25 

 Series Circuit- electric current goes through each device in the circuit in one sequential, complete path from the source of the current.  If one light bulb in a series goes out, the others go out as well because the circuit is no longer complete.

 Can you get two bulbs to light at the same time?  FOSS Magnetism and Electricity Kit: Investigation 3:Part1: Building Series Circuits: Pages 4-15  Read Illuminating Teamwork from kit if time.

 Parallel Circuit-electric current branches into several loops and has more than one path through which the electrical current flows.  If a light bulb goes out in one of the loops or paths, the others will stay on because the electric current can flow in more than one path.

 How many different ways can you wire a parallel circuit?  FOSS Magnetism and Electricity Kit: Investigation 3:Part 2: Building Parallel Circuits: Pages 16-21

 How many ways could you wire the circuits in parallel to light two bulbs?  Answer on next slide……

 There were 6 ways!

 Complete this in your Science notebooks:  A series circuit and a parallel circuit are alike because they both ___________.  A series circuit is different from a parallel circuit because a series circuit _____________________, while a parallel circuit _________________.

 What do you believe would be the best circuit to have Christmas tree lights be? Why? Give evidence to support your answer.

 Magic of Magnets Magic of Magnets

 Can you make a magnet that turns off and on?  FOSS Magnetism and Electricity Kit: Investigation 4:Part 1:Building an Electromagnet: Pages 4-13

 Today, we discovered that when current flows through an insulated wire wound around a steel core, the steel core becomes a magnet. We also found out where to wind the wire on the core to produce the strongest magnet.  If time Use the FOSS Science Stories:: From Rags to Science: A Story of Michael Faraday as a Read Aloud at some point during the day.
