IT Major Projects  Contract Enforcement System  Grievance application replacement  Multiple MEC application customized for each MEC as needed/possible  Implementation time varies depending on customization req’s  Strategic application  SPC/Organizing  SPACS (Strike Prep and Communication System)  Emphasis on Communication

IT Major Projects  Enhanced communications/collaboration  Part of strategic plan  Web 2.0, Flash, enhanced video, blogs  Flight-Pay Loss Approval (Pre-PRSM)  Several MECs/National committees requesting  Coordination with Finance (PRSM)  Early 2009 for national committees  Financial System Upgrades/Maintentance  Peoplesoft (primary finance application)  RMS (billing system) – ongoing policy changes

IT Major Projects  Web Infrastructure  DNN 4.5  Web 2.0 modules  Conversion of ColdFusion, IBuySpy, and DNN 2  Network Infrastructure  MPLS  Server consolidation  Data bandwidth management  Herndon T3 (~46 MBPS)  Interoffice connectivity  Business resumption data traffic  VOIP traffic management

IT Major Projects  Business Resumption  Backup data centers in Chicago, Memphis  All critical services (email, VOIP, Aspen, AMES,…) will have instant availability if primary failure

IT Services  ALPA Web Infrastructure  DotNetNuke 4.5  Many modules available  Web 2.0 ready  Easier admin for webmasters, but additional training needed  Multiple/redundant front-ends  Multiple/redundant databases  Functionality available to handle most requirements

IT Services  Web Applications and Development  Standard applications  Contract Enforcement (grievance)  SPACS (member organizing/communications)  Virtual Office (collaboration)  ALPA Channel (video library)  Coming:  Content management  Blogs  Standard MEC portal

MEC Application Implementation Timeframes  Standard versus Heavily Customized  Every MEC is different  Desire to have an all-functional, do all application  Standard version will generally work for every MEC  May only have common data or single step  But it can be working in 2 weeks  Customized version  Dependant upon dedicated developer (may cost $$)  Timeframe - 2 months-6 months, or longer  Very subject to scope creep, design-as-you-go  Complexity creates resistance, delays

MEC Application Implementation Timeframes  Considerations  If starting with nothing, start with basic  Immediate service provided  No cost  Build upon the basic version with small increments  Better understanding for future design  If you are replacing an application  Try to match functions, fields  Build upon the application after it is in production  Faster implementation  Avoid scope and feature creep  Define requirements, firm implementation date

IT Services  Making the most with your web site  Technology can create a great web site, but  Content is “king”  Members need updates, new items  Try to make use of multiple contributors  The best designed, the most functionally rich website is poor without up-to-date information

IT Services  Herndon Data Center  Over 100 servers  File, database, web, application, and communications  Redundant critical servers  Data Storage – 20 TB available  Scalable to over 100 TB  UPS and Generator  Multiple external communication links  Primary link is 45Mbps  Separate links for VOIP/business resumption

IT Services  VOIP (Voice-over-IP)  Telephone system replacement with Cisco  Conversion to single voice mail (ASPEN)  Offices on the ALPA VOIP System:  Atlanta (DAL)Chicago (UAL)  Dallas (EGL)Herndon/DC  Houston (CAL/XJT)Memphis (FDX)  Milwaukee (MEA)Minneapolis (NWA/MSA)  Phoenix (MAG)Seattle (ALA)  Toronto (ACJ)  Works with call center function of SPACS  Other offices can be converted as needed

IT Services  Individual Computers/Phones  Standard ALPA desktop/laptop for ALPA officers and volunteers  Standard setup (Vista/Office 2007)  ALPA email address  AT&T cell phone contract  Centralized billing  Better discounts  Email linkage to ALPA

IT Services  Audio/Video  AT&T audio conference services  Reservation/reservationless capabilities  Audio streaming to web  Video conferencing  Large “town” meeting capability  Polycom equipment  Can also connect to local AT&T facility  Video webcasting
