3. What are the British Isles? They are in the north-west of Europe and they include Great Britain, Ireland, as well as lots of very small islands: the Shetlands, the Orkneys and the Hebrides, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

4. What is the United Kingdom? U. K. is the political name, which includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is a separate country. The capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

5. The total area of the UK is about 245,000 square miles. Scotland, Wales, the Pennines are called the backbone of England. The climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream, so it is quite warm in England but it rains often. In winter there are about 4°C and in summer 16°C.

6. Political system Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy with the Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state. She is also the commander of the armed forces and follows the advice of the Cabinet. The British Parliament is one of the oldest in the world.

7. English legends There are many legends, e. g. about King Arthur and The Knights of the Round Table or a more modern one about Robin Hood.
