Part II Good Anger In Action Or, (The Upside of Anger)

The following will remove the notion that a good and right reaction to all negative situations is a non-angry response. And that anger in itself is wrong in every circumstance.

Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words, and he ____________. I Samuel 11:6 I Samuel 11:6

Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words, and he ___________________. prayed and fasted prayed and fasted began to prophesy began to prophesy used his spiritual gift used his spiritual gift

Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words, and he became very angry. I Samuel 11:6 I Samuel 11:6

Please turn to I Samuel 11:1-5 Context: The good news is that Nahash the Ammonite has offered terms of peace to the Jewish community at Jabesh-gilead. Here is the bad news: But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "I will make it with you on this condition, that I will gouge out the right eye of every one of you, thus I will make it a reproach on all Israel." I Samuel 11:2 I Samuel 11:2

What did the Holy Spirit produced anger cause Saul to do? Saul defended the innocent by attacking the Ammonites!

Let’s Examine Saul’s Righteous Anger 1.It was initiated by the Holy Spirit 2.It is a valid human emotion and is part of being made in the “image of God.” Genesis 1:26 3.It wasn’t about his rights being violated, but rather an evil injustice perpetrated on the people of God. 4.A nonchalant attitude would have been sinful and repulsive. 5.Anger produced right action against sin and evil.

The Difference Between Sinful Anger and Godly Anger 1.Sinful anger loses the rational dimension while godly anger doesn’t. 2.The Holy Spirit produces godly anger, while the flesh produces sinful anger. 3.Sinful anger makes one feel bad, godly anger makes one feel good. 4.Sinful anger gives Satan the win, godly anger brings glory to God. 5.Righteous anger is part of our spiritual warfare while sinful anger makes us AWOL.

If you want to test your godly anger maybe you want to see the movie United 93. America needs to remember the anger it once had and continue our struggle against Islamic terrorism

Examining in the Bible two responses to a family member’s rape…

David’s Impotent Anger II Samuel 13:21 David though angry, refused to punish Amnon for raping his half- sister Tamar. As a result, Tamar’s full-brother Absalom murdered Amnon and later started a civil war.

The verse should read: Now when King David heard of all these matters, he was very angry and he (did something). II Samuel 13:21 II Samuel 13:21

(The Flipside of David) Simeon and Levi’s Murderous Anger Genesis 34:1-7,25-29 When Dinah the daughter of Jacob and sister of Simeon and Levi was raped, these two brothers massacred the men of Shechem.

Judgment on the Brothers Genesis 49:5-7 Both brothers lost the right to have the Messiah King be born to their lineage.

Simeon and Levi Violated the Principle of Just Retribution The followings is one of the most misunderstood Bible verses "But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.” Exodus 21:23-25

The Essence of Just-Retribution is that… The penalty must fit the crime. There must not be too little penalty (David), or too much (Simeon and Levi).

Summary Three Responses to Anger: Saul = Righteous response Saul = Righteous response David = Impotent response David = Impotent response Simeon / Levi = Evil Simeon / Levi = Evil response response
