Three Basic Suggestions Finding people Finding needs Meeting them

www.postalheritage.org.uk Finding People… Legwork Be intelligent, aim high and aim smart Look for power, influence, money, endorsement Watch the media, Twitter for topicality – and make yourself topical all the time Use champions at your own organisation – don’t just ‘have’ them Friends? Politicians know people, get your MP in! (or – Councillor, Mayor, Euro MP, etc.)

Trusts/Foundations, Corporates, Individuals Infrastructure – need a good database, share contacts internally Consider the ‘usual suspects’, they can often point you to further sources ‘Funding Pots’ – common mindset – is it right? Corporates/Individuals often less restricted, but you need to remain competitive Right vehicle – own charity? Own bank account?

Lunches and meetings, no substitute for personal and telephone contact, email does not work Look at income diversification advice from NCVO, ACEVO, other bodies – outside immediate purlieu of archives Champions to help if you get stuck Ask for donations all the time!
