Laboratories Assessed
21
Observations Most laboratories only complete one DI water wash Occupants confused about recycling procedures within buildings Daylight used often rather than lighting available within laboratory No space heaters being used Most laboratory occupants either bike or take the bus to work Some laboratories obtain specimens from nearby locations
22
Improvements ~5-10 kWh/day savings in each laboratory Saving 60,000 L/year of cooling water Chemical waste segregations More incubators than refrigerators in use
23
Results Redistributed equipment including: HPLC Autosampler Four Ultra-cold freezers Spectrometer Refrigerated microcentrifuge
24
LARS Difficulties Minimal Incentives for participants Operating savings Reduced utilities and resources Labor Intensive (6-10 hours per laboratory) Scheduling Data collection and analysis Interviews Presentation
25
Next Steps Close the Sash Campaign: convincing laboratory occupants to close fume hood while not in use Surplus Chemical Website: a website for laboratory occupants to claim or give away chemicals Surplus Equipment Program: a developing program to redistribute unused equipment around campus Bulb Free: interns coordinating with Facilities and laboratories to remove unneeded lighting LabRATS: list serve: news, clinics, services
