ADC 399 Requirements ADC published March 18, 2011 Incorporated in DLM 4000.25, DLMS Manual, Vol II – Establishes a mandatory continuation page for serialized item shipments Continuation page contains machine readable bar code symbols for the encoded content information including serial numbers and UIIs Supplements existing rules requiring inclusion of the UII in a Portable Data File 417 (PDF417) two-dimensional (2D) bar code for single item shipments with new Macro PDF417 bar code(s) including multiple UIIs Continuation page also lists linear bar codes for serial numbers with associated human readable value 2

2D Bar Code When a Macro PDF417 is used, the data common to all items of the shipment are in the first PDF417 symbol followed by data elements of stand-alone serial numbers (that have no associated UIIs), or followed by data elements identifying UIIs and their associated serial numbers – When space is exhausted in a symbol’s data capacity, move on to next Macro PDF417 bar code to encode additional data – There is no rule requiring when a new bar code is begun - space within a symbol’s format is the determining factor – There is no need to repeat shipment-related data in the next Macro PDF417 bar code 3

New Challenges Identified Underlying problem first identified by Marine Corps: – Intended capability not fully achieved – Current capability limited to: List of UIIs, List of serial numbers, or List of concatenated UIIs with pointer to embedded serial number – The UII is preceded by two digits that represent the number of characters (01-30) for the serial number embedded at the end of the UII. 5
6
Impact and Way Ahead What this means for users.… – If a serial number is not used to construct the UII, it cannot be identified in the PDF417. – If the UII is provided by other than the OEM, the serial number in the UII may not match the serial number on the data plate. – If the serial number used for tracking is DoD-assigned (not the OEM serial number), the PDF417 will contain the wrong serial number Working with AIT community to test new methods of looping data within PDF417 – Limited success – requires reprogramming Working with OSD SCI to better define requirements for DoD use of serial number within logistics processes – Harmonize with MIL STD 129 and MIL STD 130 – Harmonize with DLMS so that the transaction UII/serial number matches the PDF417 UII/serial number
