6 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging EVALUATION Evaluation will consist of: 1) Quiz = 21% (Sept. 25) 2) Mid-Term= 39% (Nov. 1) 3) Final Exam = 40% (Between Dec. 5 – 18) For specific details see the syllabus.

12 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging WHAT IS PSYCHOSOCIAL AGING? Psychosocial: one’s psychological development in & interaction within a social environment. Unique internal processes that occur w/in an individual.

13 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging ONTOGENIC MODELS What does Ontogenic mean? What is an Ontogenic model? Universal, sequential, and irreversible stages.

14 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging ONTOGENIC MODELS: ERIK ERIKSON What is the most famous ontogenic model? What does it comprise of? Psychosocial crisis at each stage. What is the Epigentic Principle?

15 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging PSYCHOSOCIAL THEORY “When the environment makes new demands on people, the conflicts arise. The person is faced with a choice between two ways of coping with each crisis, an adaptive, or maladaptive way. Only when each crisis is resolved, which involves a change in the personality, does the person have sufficient strength to deal with the next stages of development. If a person is unable to resolve a conflict at a particular stage, they will confront and struggle with it later in life.” Schultz & Schultz, 1987

16 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging PSYCHOSOCIAL THEORY Purely Ontogenic Theory: 1) Qualitatively distinct stages 2) Universal Stages 3) Sequential Stages 4) Irreversible Stages - What is the Flaw in these models?

17 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging THE 8 STAGES If you did not attend Class #2, please check Blackboard Learn to obtain the document on Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory. You are mostly concerned with Stage 8 for the purposes of this class, but we will discuss all 7 stages briefly and you can be tested on any of the stages.

18 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging PSYCHOSOCIAL CRISIS AGEEXPECTED RESOLUTION Trust vs. Mistrust InfancyChild develops belief that environment can be counted on to meet basic physiological & social needs Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt ToddlerChild learns what they can control & develop a sense of free will & corresponding sense of regret & sorrow for inappropriate use of self-control.

19 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging PSYCHOSOCIAL CRISIS AGEEXPECTED RESOLUTION Initiative vs. Guilt Early Childhood Child learns to begin action, to explore, to imagine and feel remorse for actions Accomplishment/Industry vs. Inferiority Middle Childhood/ Elementary Child learns to do things well or correctly in comparison to a standard or to others

20 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging PSYCHOSOCIAL CRISIS AGEEXPECTED RESOLUTION Identity vs. Role Confusion AdolescentDevelop a sense of self in relation to others and to own internal thoughts/desires Initimacy vs. Isolation Young AdultDevelops ability to give & receive love; begins to make long-term relationship commitments Generativity vs. Stagnation Middle Adulthood Develops interest in guiding the development of the next generation

21 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging STAGE 8: INTEGRITY vs. DESPAIR Later Adulthood (60 years-Death) Psychosocial Crisis: Ego integrity vs. despair Goal: to be fulfilled & develop a sense of unity with self & others. Central Task: Introspection Ego Quality: Wisdom Developmental Task: redirect energy to new roles/activities, develop view about death. Significant Relations: Marital partner, friends

22 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging STAGE 8: “to be, through having been, to face not being”. Time of inwardness and reflection. Closure. INTEGRITY vs. DESPAIR.  INTEGRITY = content, whole, accepting of death.  DESPAIR = discontent, failure, lack of purpose, fear death.

23 GRT 2100: Psychosocial Aspects of Aging OUR FOCUS: STAGE 8 (OLDER ADULTHOOD) PSYCHOSOCIAL CRISIS AGE EXPECTED RESOLUTION Ego Integrity vs. Despair Older Adulthood Develops a sense of acceptance of life as it was lived & the importance of the people and relationships that individual developed over the lifespan.
