2 Terry Fox Re-Writes  Were much better!  Everyone improved.  However, still a few things to remember:  Quotes need to be introduced and cited.  The title of the text needs to be introduced.  Make sure that you have a strong concluding sentence.

5 I Noticed  Many of you:  Missed the irony in the article  Misunderstood the prompt  Incorrectly integrated and cited quotes  Had weak concluding sentences. It is the last sentence the marker reads!

6 Stereotypes  Discuss with your group, what are traditional stereotypes that exist for Canadians and New Yorkers?

7 The Purpose of the Article  With your group, discuss the purpose of the article “A Nice Place to Visit”. -What is the author trying to say?

8 The Purpose  The author is comparing New York City to Toronto  He uses irony to criticize New York  Every statement that appears to criticize Toronto, is actually criticizing New York

9 Let’s Re-Read  Looking at the article again, lets see what the author is really saying.

10 Multiple Choice  Take up multiple choice questions

11 The prompt  With reference to the text, discuss irony.  This does not mean irony in general – it means irony in the text you just read!  You must give multiple examples of irony.

12 Quotes  You MUST:  Introduce your quote  Provide a citation Ex. (McCann, para 4)  Explain your quote How does it support your point?

13 Practice Task  Practice properly integrating these quotes.

14 Concluding Sentences  This is the last sentence the marker reads!  It is crucial that it is strong and impactful.  The marker will assign your mark within 5 seconds of reading your last sentence!

15 Re-Writes  You can re-write this piece for homework if you like.  There will be no class time for this.  If you missed the irony, I would highly recommend re-writing.  Irony is tricky and you need to make sure you understand it!
