1 OASIS OAS/FEMCIDI ORCHESTRA PROGRAM FOR YOUTH AT RISK IN THE CARIBBEAN HAITI  JAMAICA  SAINT LUCIA Inter-American Workshop The Role of the Arts and Communications Media in Education for a Democratic Citizenship June 18, 2010

2 What: A systematic (5 days a week, 2 hours a day) orchestral and choral training program Why: To lower school dropout rates To reduce youth violence risk factors To create skills for the job environment Who: At risk youth (ages 10-18) in Haiti Jamaica Saint Lucia THE PROGRAM

3 Program addresses: –School dropouts –Youth violence –Youth unemployment Each pilot country has a high record for each issue being tackled: Haiti: High youth illiteracy rates Expected Benefit: Higher class attendance and lower dropout rates Jamaica: High youth violence rates Expected Benefit: Decrease in violence risk factors in schools and neighborhoods Saint Lucia: High youth unemployment Expected Benefit: Better skills for the labor market LONG TERM BENEFITS
