Chelmsford Public Schools Fine and Performing Arts Department Band Curriculum Map By the end of each grade level, students will be able to: Grade 5Grade 6 In addition to grade 5: Grade 7 In addition to grade 6: Grade 8 In addition to grade 7: Literacy Rhythm: Count simple rhythmic patterns using 1+2+ method. Rhythms include: whole notes/rests, half notes/rests, dotted half notes, quarter notes/rests, paired eighth notes. (MACF - 2.1, 2.5, 2.7, 5.1) Time signatures: Read & understand 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 (MACF - 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 5.1) Major key signatures: Concert Bb and F Major (2.7) Musical Terms & Concepts: Breath mark, tie, multi- measure rest, chord, arpeggio, concert pitch, tempo, form, 1 st /2 nd endings, da capo al fine, solo, soli, tutti, accidental symbols, unison/divisi, pick-up note, dynamics, fermata, transposition, phrase. (2.3, 2.7, Rhythm: Count simple rhythmic patterns using 1+2+ method. Rhythms include: syncopation, dotted quarter notes, single eighth notes and rests. (MACF - 2.1, 2.5, 2.7, 5.1) Time signatures: Read and understand: Cut time (MACF - 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 5.1) Major key signatures: Concert Eb and Ab Major Musical Terms & Concepts: Syncopation, enharmonic, interval, tenuto, dal segno, mixed meter Rhythm: Count simple rhythmic patterns using 1+2+ method. Rhythms include: Sixteenth Notes (MACF - 2.1, 2.5, 2.7, 5.1) Time signatures: Read and understand 3/8, 6/8. (MACF - 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 5.1) Major key signatures: Concert C Major Musical Terms & Concepts: Motive Rhythm: Count simple rhythmic patterns using 1+2+ method. Rhythms include: Sixteenth note combinations, eighth note triplets. (MACF - 2.1, 2.5, 2.7, 5.1) Major key signatures: Concert G Major

Chelmsford Public Schools Fine and Performing Arts Department Band Curriculum Map By the end of each grade level, students will be able to: Grade 5Grade 6 In addition to grade 5: Grade 7 In addition to grade 6: Grade 8 In addition to grade 7: Eartraining and Sightreadin g Eartraining: Proper vocal technique, including pitch matching, singing pitch names while fingering the notes, singing solfege patterns in movable “do”, singing appropriate articulations (MACF - 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1-2.7) Sightreading: Be able to sightread an 8 measure exercise, song, or musical phrase according to the Grade 5 Literacy and Expression standards. (MACF - 2.1-2.4, 2.6, 2.7, 2.9) Tuning: Understand how to use a tuner and adjust instrument accordingly, hum a given pitch and match pitch on instrument (MACF - 3.7) Eartraining: Audibly differentiate the difference between a half and whole step as well as major and minor keys. (MACF – 2.6, 5.1, 5.8, 5.9) Sightreading: Be able to sightread an 8- 16 measure excerpt according to the Grade 6 Literacy and Expression standards. (MACF - 2.1-2.4, 2.6, 2.7, 2.9) Tuning: Understand how to tune by ear (MACF - 3.7) Eartraining: Audibly differentiate major intervals (P4, P5, P8) (MACF – 2.6, 5.1, 5.8, 5.9) Sightreading: Be able to sightread a 24 measure excerpt according to the Grade 7 Literacy and Expression standards. (MACF - 2.1-2.4, 2.6, 2.7, 2.9) Eartraining: Audibly differentiate between major and minor scales -natural, harmonic (MACF 5.1, 5.3, 5.9) Audibly differentiate major intervals (M3, M6, M7) (MACF – 2.6, 5.1, 5.8, 5.9) Sightreading: Be able to sightread a 24 measure excerpt according to the Grade 8 Literacy and Expression standards. (MACF - 2.1-2.4, 2.6, 2.7, 2.9)

Chelmsford Public Schools Fine and Performing Arts Department Band Curriculum Map By the end of each grade level, students will be able to: Grade 5Grade 6 In addition to grade 5: Grade 7 In addition to grade 6: Grade 8 In addition to grade 7: Technique Winds and Mallet Percussion Scales: Perform one-octave Concert Bb and F Major Scales at q=88, slurred up, tongued down, according to the rhythm on the NE Junior District Scale Sheet (range may be adjusted for specific instrument needs) (MACF – 3.1, 3.7) Scales: Perform one-octave Concert Eb & Ab Major Scales at q=88, slurred up, tongued down, according to the rhythm on the NE Junior District Scale Sheet (range may be adjusted for specific instrument needs) (MACF – 3.1, 3.7) Scales: Perform one-octave Concert C Major Scales at q=88, slurred up, tongued down, according to the rhythm on the NE Junior District Scale Sheet (range may be adjusted for specific instrument needs) Perform one-octave chromatic scale starting on Concert Bb at q=120 using quarter notes (MACF – 3.1, 3.7) Scales: Perform one-octave Concert G Major Scales at q=88, slurred up, tongued down, according to the rhythm on the NE Junior District Scale Sheet (range may be adjusted for specific instrument needs) Perform two-octave chromatic scale (range may be adjusted for specific instrument needs) at q=88 using triplet eighth notes. (MACF – 3.1, 3.7)

Chelmsford Public Schools Fine and Performing Arts Department Band Curriculum Map By the end of each grade level, students will be able to: Grade 5Grade 6 In addition to grade 5: Grade 7 In addition to grade 6: Grade 8 In addition to grade 7: Technique Non-pitched Percussion and Timpani Rhythms: Perform single 8 th notes, single 8 th rests, 8 th and paired 16 th note combinations Identify and perform rhythms with correct sticking Rudiments: single paradiddle, multiple bounce roll, flam Instruments: Practice pad, snare drum, all mallet instruments, bass drum, suspended cymbal, triangle, wood block, sleigh bells, tambourine, timpani Timpani Tuning: with electronic tuner (MACF – 3.1, 3.7) Perform double stops and rolls on mallet instruments Rudiments: Identify and perform flam taps, flam accent, flam paradiddle, 9- stroke roll, 5-stroke roll, 17-stroke roll, drag, single drag tap Instruments: Crash cymbals, claves, maracas, temple blocks (MACF – 3.1, 3.7) Rudiments: flamacue Instruments: Bongos/congas Understand pedaling on a vibraphone Timpani Tuning by ear (MACF – 3.1, 3.7) Rudiments: 7-stroke roll Instruments: Cowbell Timpani Tuning by ear during a piece (MACF – 3.1, 3.7)
