/////////////////////////////////// \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// A brief history… backwards Launched on 31 August 2006 Major network contracts signed March 2006 REANNZ incorporated September 2005 Cabinet provides $43M mid 2004 Advanced Network steering group develops policy and business case, 2003-04 “Collaborating at Speed” report Rita Caldwell, NSF, stimulus of Government, 2003 Ongoing agitation by the far sighted – late 1990 s and early 2000 s e.g. NGI-NZ, InternetNZ.
10
/////////////////////////////////// \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// We have five R&E objectives… Enable leading edge e-research Facilitate universal connectivity throughout the New Zealand and international research and education community Encourage broad participation by the research and education sector in New Zealand through accessible technology and reasonable pricing Connect research and education sector to the broader innovation community for pre-commercial, research and development based collaboration Facilitate participation by multiple telecommunications sector partners so as to ensure the greatest possible flexibility for ongoing evolution.
11
/////////////////////////////////// \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Capability Build Fund (CBF) REANNZ administers $5m over 3 years for a professional skill development and community CBF Essential area of work to enable effective early and sustained network utilisation Build awareness, and participate in the development, of overseas applications and sector-specific initiatives Initially requires a degree of coordination to ensure basic skills are developed quickly and consistently for common network applications REANNZ has a strong incentive to achieve early adoption so is coordinating some aspects of network-oriented capability building with its own member training activities A CBF advisory panel identifies opportunities to facilitate and fund training and pilot activities
12
/////////////////////////////////// \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// CBF – vision and early work CBF vision is that over the next three to four years: –NZ researchers will be able to participate even more effectively in international research –New or enhanced research collaborations, facilitated by KAREN, will be established within NZ. –Funding agencies will be fully aware of the value of KAREN to education and research. –KAREN will facilitate the development of new types of research that will be undertaken in NZ –KAREN will facilitate the development of new forms of education including the use of national and international services. Early areas of development work –AAA/federated identity (Shibboleth); access grids; grid computing/sharing of high performance computing resources
13
/////////////////////////////////// \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Starting late, but catching up – our immediate areas of interest Outreach –Must get beyond “the usual suspects” to promote the possibilities to a wider group of communities –KAREN “champions” in universities and Crown Research Institutes –Discipline-specific initiatives as exemplar projects –Workshops, seminars, case studies –Communicate, communicate, communicate… International relations and reach –Enhancing network and end-user collaborations Access and aggregation –Smaller institutions; schools etc –Smart commercial and technical approaches –Leverage NZ Digital Strategy and Broadband Challenge initiatives
14
/////////////////////////////////// \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Related areas of capability development Access grids; videoconferencing; rich media streaming –the ‘carbon-based’ angle to broader engagement AAA –single sign-on; federated identity; different drivers –NZ Authentication Standard SAML2 based –Education sector cooperation with early Shib. initiatives underway in universities and agencies in Oz and UK High performance computing –Appropriate implementation model under consideration –Building capability (skilled people - not infrastructure focus) –Discipline-specific versus generic drivers and managing the tension including the distortions of ‘me-science’
15
/////////////////////////////////// \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Conclusions Finally, a dedicated New Zealand R&E network with enthusiastic and innovative exploitation by early adopters– but now the hard work really begins… Beginning to tackle the broader base of end users still “steering by their wake” Exploring the “people and motivation” or “team oriented” factors for enhancing environments for collaboration Now ready to participate fully in the development of technology platforms that will enable the pursuit of better economic and social outcomes. We welcome opportunities to engage even more with you all.
