A verb is a word used to express action or state of being.

Verbs can be classified as: 1). Helping verbs 2). Action or linking verbs 3). Transitive or intransitive verbs

A helping verb helps the main verb express action or state of being. Together, a main verb and a helping verb make up a verb phrase.

Examples: 1. We will leave for New York on Sunday. will leave is the verb phrase will is the helping verb leave is the main verb 2. Miss X has been teaching here since 1995. has been teaching – verb phrase has been – helping verb teaching – main verb

1. She can eat ten hotdogs in a minute. 2. I will deliver this message tomorrow. 3. An old woman was asking for food. 4. We have tried it several times. 5. She wrote me a long letter. 6. You must study hard for the test. 7. My uncle does not have any money. 8. When will you do your homework?

The main verbs are usually the action verbs that come after the helping verbs. A main verb may be a linking or action verb. Examples: 1. She looks happy. 2. The police are looking for the suspect.

A linking verb connects the subject to a word or word group that identifies or describes the subject. examples: 1. Mr. X is one of the best teachers in our school. 2. Roses smell good. 3. She remained silent after the lecture.

A transitive verb is a verb that expresses an action directed toward a person, place, thing, or idea. Examples: 1. My dad caught a big fish. 2. We bought a brand new car yesterday. 3. Did you sharpen your pencils? 4. My mom brings coffee to her office every morning.

An intransitive verb expresses action without the action passing to a receiver, or object. examples: 1. My brother came home late. 2. I always sleep early. 3. She reads aloud in class. 4. How does it feel to be alone? ** All linking verbs are intransitive.**
