1 Action,Transitive,Intransitive, Linking,Helping Verbs

2 Action Verbs -tells what action someone is performing Example- My father waited at the station for the train. Waited tells what my father did. Action verbs can be physical or mental- PHYSICAL VERBS INCLUDE SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN SEE SOMEONE OR SOMETHING DO (EX. KICK,SWIM,PUSH) MENTAL VERBS INCLUDE ACTIONS THAT CANNOT BE SEEN (EX. HEAR, HOPE,REGRET)

3 Try some on your own: Write the action verb on your paper and say whether is it mental or physical:  1.We study the Civil War in History Class.  2. Many call it the war between the states.  3. Most Northerners believed slavery to be immoral.  4. The Southern states used slaves to support their economy.  5. Few Northerner’s, however, strongly opposed slavery.  6. Most of them just disagreed with it.  7. The North and South debated the slavery issue before the war.

5 Transitive Verbs  There must be an action verb  There must be a receiver of the action Ex.-Sandy opened the window with great difficulty. Ask yourself: 1. Is the verb an action verb? 2. If it is then what is receiving the action of open? 3. The answer- the window, so opened is a transitive verb

6 Let’s try some more- The truck suddenly hit the pedestrian. What is my verb? Is it an action verb? Is there a receiver of the action (noun) If there is then it is transitive. Is it transitive?

7 Try some on your own- write down the transitive action verb and the receiver of the action(object)  1. Differing opinions drove the North and South apart. 2. Southerners used slaves to work their extensive cotton plantations. 3. The North developed an industrialized economy that was not dependent on slavery. 4. The South imported most manufactured goods. 5. The South therefore opposed high tariffs. 6. The North demanded high tariffs to protect its products from competition. 7. The election of Abraham Lincoln angered the South.

9 Intransitive Verbs -no receiver of the action is named in the sentence The best way to determine if the verb is transitive or intransitive is to try and determine the object of the verb A prepositional phrase cannot be a receiver of the action Ex. The bus raced through the traffic light. Raced is an action verb but there is no receiver of the action Through he traffic light is a prepositional phrase and a prepositional phrase can never be the receiver of an action Ex. The war began. intransitive

10 Try to figure out which verbs in the sentence are transitive and which are intransitive 1. During the Civil War, armies used the railroads for the first time in a large conflict. 2. People argued in the North and South about the treatment of prisoners. 3. Neither the North nor the South dominated in the Senate. 4. General Pickett of the Confederate Army charged the Union forces. 5. Generals could coordinate military movements on the battle fronts. 6. The senate grew with the addition of Alabama in 1819.

14 Linking Verbs Links a subject to a word that describes it or renames it. Ex. He is a general for the North.  He renames general; is is a linking verb Ex. The winners were Tony and I.  Tony and I rename winners, were is a linking verb Ex. He looks tired from all the fighting. Tired describes the subject he so looks is the linking verb.

15 Let’s try it: write the linking verb and the two words that link it- 1. The sound on our radio could be better. 2.The parade should have been longer. 3. Some honey can be poisonous. 4. Circuses were not common in the U.S. before 1830. 5. The floor feels sticky to me. 6. Pollution in big cities still remain a problem. 7. Many events were responsible for the Civil War. 8. The other states were “slave” or “free” by choice. 9. The North appeared stronger at the beginning. 10. He looks very dirty from all the fighting.

17 How do you tell if it is a linking verb or an action verb? Ask yourself this question- What is the verb doing in the sentence? If the verb links a subject to a word that describes or renames it, it is a linking verb --- if the verb is used to describe action it is an action verb.

18 Common Helping Verbs- forms of bee! Am,is,are,was,were,be,being,been,has, have,had,do,does,did,may,might,must, can,could,shall,shall,would,will

19 Helping Verbs A main verb can or may have one or more helping verbs. Ex. The acrobats are practicing somersaults. Are practicing is the verb phrase, but are is the helping verb One or more words may interrupt the verb phrase. Not and the part of the contraction n’t are never part of a verb phrase. Your train is not leaving for 20 minutes. The verb phrase is leaving. To find the verb phrase in a question, turn the question into a statement. Have you called the fire department? I have called the fire department. The verb phrase is have called.

Scientists have identified about five million different species of insects. 4. From one batch of eggs, some insects can produce 2,000 identical offspring. 5. Ants have built some incredible underground cities with hundreds of tunnels. 6. Of course all ants do not work all the time. 7. Some ants will kidnap the workers from another tribe of ants.
