Main Verbs: Action vs. Linking Action: shows mental or physical action Action verb may possibly lead to A direct object An indirect object Adverbs Linking: indicates a relationship between subject and predicate part/word in a sentence Linking verb leads to one of these predicate words: Predicate noun (gives a name or role for a person Predicate pronoun (identifies) Predicate adjectives (describes)

Action Example: Mr. Smola sold a bike. Find verb: sold Find subject: who or what sold? Mr. Smola Find direct object: verb + what? Sold what? = bike Direct object (object or person acted upon)
