1 Phonics Screening Information Evening
Hannah: Welcome Aims: To find out about the Year 1 Phonics Screening and make suggests on how parents can best support their children.

4 PHONICS Is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. Recognise the sounds each individual letter makes. Identify sounds that different combinations of letters make e.g sh or oo. Blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word. Children use this knowledge to decode new words that they hear or see. We use ‘Letters and Sounds’: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics to teach Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

Children need to practise recognising the grapheme and saying the phoneme that it represents. Hannah Demonstrate this phoneme is this grapheme.

10 BLENDING SEGMENTING Recognising the letter sounds in a written word,
c-l-ow-n and merging or ‘blending’ them in the order in which they are written to pronounce the word ‘clown’ SEGMENTING Hear and say the individual phonemes within words. ‘Chopping Up’ the word to spell it out clown = c-l-ow-n Julia

11 Screening Check A short, simple assessment to make sure that all pupils have learned phonic decoding to an appropriate standard by the age of 6. All year 1 pupils in maintained schools, academies and free schools must complete the check. The phonics check will help teachers identify the children who need extra help so they can receive the support they need to improve their reading skills. These children will then be able to retake the check in year 2. Hannah Parents write on their phoneme frames

16 Results of the Screening
Previous past marks have been 32 out of 40. This years pass mark will not be known until after the screening week. Parents will receive a letter sharing the results once they have been collated and verified. Hannah
