PHONICS Is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. Recognise the sounds each individual letter makes. Identify sounds that different combinations of letters make e.g sh or oo. Blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word. Children use this knowledge to decode new words that they hear or see. We use ‘Letters and Sounds’: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics to teach Reception, Year 1 and Year 2
5
PHONEME The smallest unit of sound in a word.
There are 44 phonemes that we teach. Julia

Screening Check A short, simple assessment to make sure that all pupils have learned phonic decoding to an appropriate standard by the age of 6. All year 1 pupils in maintained schools, academies and free schools must complete the check. The phonics check will help teachers identify the children who need extra help so they can receive the support they need to improve their reading skills. These children will then be able to retake the check in year 2. Hannah Parents write on their phoneme frames
