Organizations that issue mobile devices to employees. Switch away from mobile platforms that are failing, such as BlackBerry. Decide which platforms should be migrated to. Develop a plan to make the migration, from phasing out the old platform, to getting users on board, to implementing management infrastructure. The service desk manager. Organizations that integrate bring your own device (BYOD) as part of their mobile device mix. Make the transition to a new platform without service desk becoming overwhelmed with new issues. Decide which platforms should be allowed to connect to company resources, whether they are owned by the company or by employees. Become involved in platform decisions early, ensuring that strategies include ongoing management and administration concerns.

Info-Tech Research Group3 3 V4 Resolution Situation ! Complication ? Info-Tech Insight Executive summary Constant innovation in mobile technology is resulting in a shift in usage patterns of mobile devices in the workplace. The demise of the current platform used in the organization requires a shift towards a new, more capable platform. Users are loyal to the current platform, and may resist change. Multiple platforms seem to be viable, and it is difficult to determine which one(s) to migrate to. There are many moving parts when switching mobile platforms, and it is important not to waste time or resources performing the switch. Decide if it is time for your organization to reconsider your current platform. Use Info-Tech’s Switch Mobile Platforms Project Approval Tool to understand your current state, assess the health of your current platform, determine your urgency to change, and rank the current available platforms in the market. Use the results to complete Info-Tech’s Switch Mobile Platforms Project Approval Template to get executives on board for the project. Develop a customized action plan for the process of phasing out a platform and introducing a new one, and monitor the progress using Info-Tech’s Switch Mobile Platforms Project Planning and Monitor Tool. Continue to monitor, re-evaluate, and refine your plan as mobility evolves. This will happen again. 1.BlackBerry’s uncertain future puts its customers at risk BlackBerry used to dominate the enterprise, but with its uncertain future and lack of evolution, it is not the best choice. 2.Mobile technology changes so fast that there will be a need to switch again Mobile platforms continue to change and evolve. Be proactive to stay ahead of the curve.

Info-Tech Research Group8 8 V4 There are three main reasons to develop a plan for switching mobile platforms Don’t fall behind. If you haven’t considered switching mobile platforms, now is the time. Your current platform is not meeting the needs of the organization. Today that platform is probably BlackBerry. Tomorrow it could be another platform. Don’t ignore the issue, sticking with a fading platform while users suffer. 1 Mobility is evolving at an exponential rate; there are better platform options. Mobile technology is today’s primary example of the increasing pace of technological advancement. Have a plan to keep up with and exploit new developments. 2 An efficient plan is necessary for a smooth migration. A good plan reduces wasted investments, minimizes user pushback, and begins empowering users with a mobile platform that best meets their needs. Without a plan, the migration will be expensive and chaotic. 3

Info-Tech Research Group9 9 V4 Many BlackBerry shops are abandoning the struggling platform; does BlackBerry have a future? Separate fact from fiction with Info-Tech’s The State of BlackBerry in 2014.The State of BlackBerry in 2014 Most organizations are migrating off of the BlackBerry platform, and the company has received harsh criticism over the past few years. Info-Tech has compiled an in-depth analysis of where we believe BlackBerry is today and where we think it is heading in the future. See if BlackBerry is still right for you in Info-Tech’s The State of BlackBerry in 2014, and review Appendix A for an analysis of alternative mobile platforms. The State of BlackBerry in 2014 The BlackBerry Situation “We used to be on BlackBerry, but a couple of years ago, because of their lack of keeping up with technology, we decided to migrate off of BlackBerry to Apple.” – Danny Lynn, Director of IT, Mohegan Sun Pocono Downs Prepare for more change. BlackBerry’s uncertain future is the main reason that organizations are considering a switch in mobile platforms. However, with the rate of innovation and change in the mobility space, it is possible that another platform could be in BlackBerry’s situation in the near future. Info-Tech Insight

Info-Tech Research Group10Info-Tech Research Group10 V4 Failure isn’t the only reason to switch. Consider a change if: It’s not just about BlackBerry; advances in mobility mean any platform may need to be phased out as conditions change 1.Users are demanding it. Current devices are not helping them do their jobs, or overbearing management is preventing them from using the devices to their full potential. 2.Management has become needlessly complicated for IT. Managing hundred of BES policies, different for every group, is putting too much pressure on IT without bringing much benefit to anybody. 3.BYOD has brought in new devices. Whether IT approves of personal devices or not, users are bringing them to do their jobs with. BYOD means new management to regain security and control. It also means that if the mobile platform IT provides is not good enough, users can now take matters into their own hands. Be prepared for “black swan events” in the fast-moving mobile space. This will happen again. Make a plan flexible enough to act as a contingency plan for any platform you decide to settle on. Black swan events are a certainty in mobility. Black swan events are defined as having major effects but a low likelihood of happening, making them difficult to predict. However, in mobility, events such as the rapid fall of one platform, or the rapid rise of another, are a certainty. The only unknown is whether the platform(s) affected will be the ones you choose. A contingency plan is the only way to prepare for black swan events. Expect the unexpected when it comes to mobility; the healthiest mobile platform today may be a laughing stock tomorrow. Have an updated contingency plan in place now, to avoid costly migrations later, no matter what the likelihood.

Info-Tech Research Group11Info-Tech Research Group11 V4 Mobility has evolved; switch mobile platforms to keep up The expected capabilities of mobile platforms have changed. Advanced functions are expected on top of basic telephony and messaging: CapabilityDescription Form factor variationInnovative designs, from watches to phones to phablets to tablets. ApplicationsAn app for nearly any imaginable purpose is now expected. Consumer focusTechnology is expected to serve users at work and at home. Broader ecosystemA platform is more than its OS; e.g. music, games, video come integrated. Integration with other techProducts extend their capabilities to other non-mobile technologies. While BlackBerry has progressed, it has done so at a slower rate than competitors. The above features are examples of areas in which BlackBerry has fallen behind, which is partially responsible for the shift away from the platform. The graph on the right demonstrates BlackBerry’s decline in comparison with competitors, even in its home country of Canada.
