Meaning on Manifest Destiny Quote from John O’Sullivan: “Our Manifest Destiny is to overspread and possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and self government.” A belief that developed that it was the fate of the U.S. to control all land from the East Coast to the Pacific Ocean (The West)

Early 1800’s 21 California Missions are established by Spain from San Diego heading approximately 650 miles up California.

1821 Spain invites American settlers into their land. GTT signs are seen often. GTT means “Gone to Texas”. The leader of the group into this region is Stephen Austin.

1821 Mexico fights Spain for their independence. Stephen Austin convinces the Mexican government to allow his settlers to enter as Mexican citizens.

1833-1836 The Mexican rule of Texas increases. Stephen Austin meets with the Mexican President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Austin is imprisoned for a year. Mexican troops start to build in the Texas region.

1836- “Remember the Alamo” Texas declares independence from Mexico. A small army of 183 volunteer soldiers defend the Alamo. The Mexican army surrounds the old mission and attack for twelve days. The Texans will not surrender. After running out of ammunition, the Mexican soldiers take over killing all but 5 women and children.

1836 Texas defeats the Mexican troops and becomes a republic after Santa Anna is forced to surrender to Sam Houston. Texas is headed by President Sam Houston. Texas gets the name: “The Lone-Star State”

Annexation of Texas- 1845 Texas is annexed (admitted) as the 28 th state of the United States. They enter the union as a slave state. Cotton is a very productive cash crop in this region. Slave labor is used.

1846- Oregon Territory The Oregon Territory conflict with England (the British) occurs over the border limit. The slogan of “54 40 or fight!” is heard by the American people. A treaty is signed and the Northern boundary is set at the 49 th parallel.

1846 President James Polk declares war on Mexico after a dispute over the boundary of Texas. Mexico claims the boundary is Nueces River, while the United States says it the Rio Grande. The Mexican- American War begins.

1847 In California the Bear Flag Revolt occurs as John C. Fremont rebels against Mexican rule. The rebels raise a crude flag showing a grizzly bear. They declare California as a free republic.

1847 Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott invade Mexico and force the surrender of the Mexican government. The capital of Mexico City was seized.

1848 The Mexican Cession is complete after the signing of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It is decided that the United States will pay Mexico $15 Million for the land that comprises California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and parts of New Mexico and Colorado.

1849 Gold is discovered in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range of California. The gold rush begins. A large number of people head to the California territory (the west) in hopes of getting rich quickly. These people will be referred to as 49er’s

1850 The Compromise of 1850 is signed allowing California to become a free state (31 st state).

1853- Gadsden Purchase Congress spends $10 Million to obtain the lower portions of New Mexico and Arizona. The land is purchased by Congress to help with the transcontinental railroad. This acquisition helps to open the west. This is the last part that will make up our current continental United States (the 48 states).

Gadsden Purchase (Add a picture) When did we get it? Where is the land? How and from whom did we get the land? What was our primary reason for wanting this land?
