3 Jack London (1876 – 1916) Jack London (real name John Griffin) was born January 12, 1876 in San Francisco in the family of a bankrupt farmer. was an American author, journalist, and social activist.

4 Family His mother, Flora Wellman, she worked as a music teacher. Some biographers suppose that Jack London’s father was William Chaney who lived with Flora Wellman in San Francisco. It is not known if Flora and William were legally married. The house where Jack London spent his childhood was destroyed after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

5 Early life After giving birth, Flora turned the baby over to ex- slave Virginia Prentiss, who remained a major maternal figure throughout London's life. Late in 1876, Flora Wellman married John London, a partially disabled Civil War veteran in the United States, then took the baby back. The boy was called John of London

6 Early life London was essentially self- educated In 1885, London found and read Ouida's long Victorian novel Signa. In 1889, London began working 12 to 18 hours a day at Hickmott's Cannery bought the sloop Razzle- Dazzle from an oyster pirate named French Frank, and became an oyster pirate. London hired on as a member of the California Fish Patrol London at the age of nine with his dog Rollo, 1885

7 After a while he came to Oakland and entered Oakland High School where he started writing articles for the school’s magazine, The Aegis. The first work of London was “Typhoon off the Coast of Japan” in which he described his sailing experiences. In 1896 Jack London entered the University of California, Berkeley but because of financial difficulties he left the university in a year.

8 Gold rush At the age of 21 Jack London joined the Klondike Gold Rush. This period of life was a basis for some of his popular stories but his health declined there. As a result London had the scurvy. All the events in the Klondike were an incitement for him to write a short story “To Build a Fire” which is considered one of his best Miners and prospectors ascend the Chilkoot Trail during the Klondike Gold Rush

9 First marriage (1900–1904) London married Elizabeth "Bessie" Maddern on April 7, 1900, the same day The Son of the Wolf was published. Their first child, Joan, was born on January 15, 1901 and their second, Becky on October 20, 1902. Both children were born in Piedmont, California. Here London wrote one of his most celebrated works, The Call of the Wild. During 1904, London and Bess negotiated the terms of a divorce, and the decree was granted on November 11, 1904 Bessie Maddern London and daughters, Joan and Becky

10 Second marriage After divorcing Maddern, London married Charmian Kittredge in 1905. They attempted to have children; one child died at birth, and another pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. Jack and Charmian London 1915 at Waikiki

11 On August 18, 1904, London went with his close friend, the poet George Sterling, to "Summer High Jinks" at the Bohemian Grove. London was elected to honorary membership in the Bohemian Club and took part in many activities. Bohemian Club

12 Animal Activism London witnessed animal cruelty in the training of circus animals, and his subsequent novels Jerry of the Islands and Michael In 1918, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the American Humane Education Society teamed up to create the Jack London Club which sought to inform the public about cruelty to circus animals and encourage them to protest this establishment

13 Death London died November 22, 1916, in a sleeping porch in a cottage on his ranch At the time of his death, he suffered from dysentery, uremia, and late stage alcoholism; he was in extreme pain and taking morphine, and it is possible that a morphine overdose, accidental or deliberate, may have contributed to his death. London's ashes were buried, together with those of his second wife Charmian (who died in 1955) Grave of Jack and Charmian London

14 Short stories "To Build a Fire" is the best known of all his stories London was a boxing fan and an avid amateur boxer. "A Piece of Steak" is a tale about a match between older and younger boxers. A collection of Jack London's San Francisco Stories was published in October 2010 by Sydney Samizdat Press.

15 Novels London's most famous novels are The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea- Wolf, The Iron Heel, and Martin Eden. London writing, 1905

16 "White Fang" “ White Fang" - a novel about nature and its inhabitants. Jack London had conceived this work as the adventure story in which most of the events described from the point of view of animals. Here is facing good and evil, nature and peaceful life, animals and people.
