Class of 2018 Alternative Paths for a High School Diploma And meet one of the following three: Earn a cumulative passing score on seven end-of-year course exams. Students must accumulate a minimum of 18 points from scores on their end-of-course exams to become eligible for a diploma. Earn a “remediation free” score on a nationally recognized college admission exam such as ACT or SAT. The state of Ohio will pay for all Class of 2018 – 11 th grade students to take the exam free of charge. Earn a State Board of Education-approved, industry-recognized credential or a state-issued license for practice in a career and achieve a score that demonstrates workforce readiness and employability on a job skills assessment Resource: education.oh.gov

Class of 2018 Testing Requirements All students will take end of course exams in the following courses: Algebra I, Applied Algebra Geometry, Applied Geometry Physical Science American History, American Government, English 9, English 10

Classes of 2017 and 2016 Graduation Test Requirement Must pass all five sections of the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) with a score of 400 or higher Meet the criteria of the Alternative Pathway.

PE Waiver Students who have completed one full season of participation in an OHSAA sanctioned sport or by completing one semester of Marching Band at River Valley High School will have.25 P.E. credit waived on their transcript.

Athletic Eligibility For athletic eligibility, students must take and pass 2.5 credits the preceding quarter to the athletic season and have a 1.0 GPA. Remember Phys.Ed. and Physical Conditioning are only worth.25 credits (per course). Viking Period is worth.25 credits each semester. Also, if you have a difficult course, it is wise to schedule more courses the same semester as the difficult course to buffer in case you struggle in the difficult course.

Sophomore Required Courses EEnglish –C–College Prep 10 MMath –A–Algebra II –G–Geometry –A–Applied Geometry WWorld Studies SScience –B–Biology I –A–Applied Biology PP.E. TThat totals 4¼ credits of required classes.

Junior Required Courses EEnglish –C–College Prep 11 –T–Tech Prep 11 MMath –A–Algebra III/Trigonometry and ideally followed by Pre-Calculus –A–Algebra II –A–Applied Algebra II SScience –C–Chemistry –E–Environmental Science That totals 3 credits of required classes.

Senior Required Courses English –College Prep 12 –Tech Prep 12 –Dual Credit English 12 Math (It is very important to take Math during your senior year.) –Algebra III/Trig. –Intro to College Algebra Social Studies –Government Life Planning –Can be replaced by taking Ag – junior and senior year. That totals 3½ credits of required classes.

Math Recommendation Form All students will need to complete with both teacher and parent signatures Students will need to acquire recommendations from their current math teacher or 1 st semester math teacher. Return with Course Registration Sheet by Tuesday, March10th

“Doubling Up in Math ” If you want to take Dual Credit Calculus I/II – Senior year. You will need to take 2-math courses per year your sophomore and/or junior year to achieve this goal. Specific questions about if “Doubling Up” is appropriate for you talk with your math teacher(s).

Foreign Languages on the Block Spanish –Students will take two credits in the same year (Spanish I- 1 st semester, Spanish II- 2 nd semester) –Priority order – Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores –Spanish III (required for the Honors Diploma) –Spanish III/IV –Reminder: Foreign Language is NOT at Graduation Requirement but a 4-year College Prep Recommendation as well as a Honors Diploma requirement – Check on the admission requirements for your specific college and major prior to Aug. 1 st

College Prep Students (to prepare to attend a 4 year college/university) MINIMUM Core Classes: English- 4 credits Math- 4 credits (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Alg. III/Trig –Many colleges including OSU want to see Alg. III/Trig & Pre-Calculus Science- 3 credits (Including Biology and Chemistry) Social Studies- 3 credits Foreign Language- 2 credits (many schools prefer 3) Keyboarding and Computer Skills Fine Arts- 1 credit College admissions requirements vary. You should check individual schools for their requirements!

Tech Prep Students (to prepare to attend a 2 year college/technical school) During the junior and senior year Health Technology (@ Harding) Engineering Technology (RAMTEC) These are half-day, off-campus programs. * To apply, see Guidance for Tri-Rivers application.

Online Courses Students may take one ½ credit course at a time. River Valley will pay for the course provided the student has at least one period where they can work in the computer lab on the online course daily at school. Students are not permitted to take multiple courses at once. If a student fails a course for any reason, River Valley Local Schools will bill the family the cost of the course. Students wishing to take an online course must have the approval of a guidance counselor and complete an application. Mr. Egan – rm 122 has applications.

College Credit Plus Take college courses for free while in high school Must attend meeting to participate. Next meeting is March 11 th – 5:30pm. More information is online – RVHS website – Guidance tab – College Credit Plus Must turn in Intent to Participate form by April 1 st Must apply to college by May 1 st

Schedule Changes All schedule changes MUST be requested in writing by August 1 st. Any request after June 1 must be mailed. After August 1 st, a student WILL NOT be allowed to change his/her schedule unless the request complies with board policy. See school handbook or curriculum guide for these details.

Registration Deadline Course Request forms Math Recommendation forms must be turned into your Viking Period Teacher by Tuesday, March 10th All forms turned in after the deadline will be scheduled last.
