1  Please take out your learning target sheet  Agenda 1.) Good Things 2.) Begin Lesson 7.4 – Major Battles in Europe Homework: Study for Lesson 7.2 and 7.3 quiz

2  - Objective: Students will evaluate the significance and results of the major battles in Europe during WWII.

3  Axis Powers – Alliance of Germany, Italy, and Japan  Allied Powers – Alliance of Great Britain, Soviet Union, and United States.  Luftwaffe – The German Air Force  Panzer - Name for the German tank divisions.

4  As I talk through the major battles of Europe, I want you to fill in the chart and then draw a depiction of the battle to help you remember the battle.  Name  Date  Who was involved?  Significance/Results

5  Date: Summer and Fall of 1940  Who was involved: Great Britain vs. Nazi Germany  Significance: Turning point of World War II because the Luftwaffe was unable to gain air superiority. Germany was unable to invade Great Britain.  Results: Great Britain won and saved the country from ground invasion and possible German occupation. Showed that air power alone could be used to win a major battle.

7  Date: December 7 th, 1941  Who was involved: Japan and The United States  Significance: F.D.R. asked congress to declare war on Japan and Germany.  Results: Destroyed 200 U.S. Naval Vessels, 8 Battleships, 2,500 soldiers died and 1,000 were wounded.

9  Date: September 8 th 1941 – Jan. 27 th, 1944  Who was involved: Germany and Russia  Significance: Russia had to fight Germany alone and Germany broke the non-aggression pact.  Results: Germany took over Leningrad and controlled it for most of the war. However, in 1944 Russia took it back. 640,000 residents died during the siege.

11  Date: Sept. 12 th, 1942 – Feb. 2 nd 1943  Who was involved: Germany and Russia  Significance: Stalin issued order 227 which meant no retreat. Germany wanted the natural resources of Russia. This battle gave the allies hope that Russia could beat Germany.  Results: Hitler lost and left the city of Stalingrad.

12  Date: Oct. 23 rd 1942 – May 1943  Who was involved: Great Britain vs. Germany and Italy  Significance: The Allies wanted the Mediterranean Sea. The allies won and now control North Africa.  Results: The Allies won the battle and drove out Nazi Germany from Northern Africa.

15  Date: June 1944 – August 1944  Who was involved: Germany vs. U.S., Great Britain, and Canada  Significance: D-Day is the largest amphibious invasion in history.  Results: The allies liberated France and Western Europe from Nazi Germany control.

17  Date: December 16 th, 1944 – Jan. 1945  Who was involved: U.S. vs. Germany  Significance: It was the last major German offensive of the war. They were trying to split the American armies and take back Belgium.  Results: The U.S. won and Germany had to retreat. The last major battle in Europe.

19  After the Battle of Bulge, Germany was in constant retreat.  American B-17’s would bomb out German cities, industries, and defense. Then send in infantry to take over the city.  After Battle of Kursk, Germany was in constant retreat in Russia.  As the allies reached closer and closer to Berlin, Hitler eventually committed suicide in his bunker.  On May 7 th, 1945, Germany surrenders unconditionally to the Allies in Europe.  However, WWII is still not over in the Pacific.

20  Take the next 10-15 minutes to write a paragraph that answers the following question. o Based on the battles you just learned about, which one or two battles do you believe were the most important in determining the outcome of the war (Germany losing). Please explain your answer.
