2 Learning outcomes for today's session: By the end of the session you will: 1.Complete the induction process 2.Complete assessments for both English and Maths 3. Evidence where they can find job vacancies? 4.Explain who can help them to find work or training in your local area? 5.Register onto Universal Job Search 6.Search for jobs using various methods including the universal jobs match system 7.All learners will have a suitable e-mail address to use when applying for jobs.

3 What is Universal Jobs Match (UJM) and how can it help me? UJM is the system now used by the job centre to advertise jobs. Jobs are available on line available by a log on, this makes vacancies available at the touch of a button. You can upload your CV’s which will make the application process easier and quicker for you. Employers can also look for CV’s on this system.

4 National Unemployment Statistics Unemployment in general has increased from 70,000 to 2.56 million nationally. 900,000 people have been out of work for more than a year and increase of 8,000 within the last 3 months. Unemployment in people aged 16 to 24 has increased from 20,000 to 979,000. Data from the Office of National Statistics (16.04.13)

6 Employment Figures in the North East The latest figures show that currently 131,000 people are unemployed. This is a rise of 12,000 over the last 3 months. Data from the Office of National Statistics (16.04.13)

8 My Skills You have a range of skills that you've built up during your lifetime, these can be used within the world of work. You can build up skills through all sorts of activities, for example: jobs projects volunteer work hobbies Sports Any other activities you carry out in your normal life!

9 General skills could include These skills can include: Communication Teamwork Leadership Initiative Solving problems Managing time And many others! Flexibility and being able to adapt Being self aware Commitment and motivation People skills Numeracy skills

10 My Skills Task 1 Using your worksheet identify 2 activities that you have carried out yesterday or at the weekend. Using your worksheet, list the skills that you have that could be useful in the world of work.

11 Finding Job vacancies in your local area Within your groups research (using PC’s) and discuss questions below making notes on the sheets provided. 1) Where can you find job vacancies? 2) Who can help you to find work or training in your local area?

12 Understanding local employers There are 4 sectors you may consider when applying for work 1.Service sector – serve people i.e. health care/ transport an delivery. 2.Manufacturing sector – producing items on a large scale for sale i.e. Nissan. 3.Public sector – government run, providing services to the public i.e. bin collectors, nurses in hospitals etc. 4.Private sector – ran by individuals or groups with a focus on making money i.e. shops, supermarkets and insurance companies.

13 Local Employers In groups of 3, discuss and research local employers which fit into all 4 sectors and record findings on the worksheet provided. You can use your mobile phones or the PC’s within the room.

14 How do I use Universal Jobs Match? We have prepared a handout for you to use and take with you for future reference. Your tutor will now talk you through this

15 Setting up a professional e-mail address Do you have a e-mail address which is suitable and can be used to communicate with potential employers? If not, you need to create one! Do this now An e-mail is possibly the first point of contact and can create the wrong impression.

16 Registering onto Universal Jobs Match Are you registered on the UJM site? If not do this now!

17 Job Search Using the Universal Jobs Match system search for 3 jobs which you would be interested in applying for, record these on the sheet provided. When considering jobs you will need to think about:- Salary (how much the job will pay a month) Location and travel expenses Travel options and time Impact on benefits (if claimed)
