What is work? Work is any useful activity Ex. Cleaning your room is work Why do we work? To MAKE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! –To pay for things we need or want

Did you know? You could end up spending more than 2,000 hours a year at work! So what kind of job is right for you? Interests are things that you like to do Skills are things you know how to do Transferable skills are ones that you can use in many different situations

Jobs, Occupations, and Careers Job –Work you do for pay Occupation –Type of work you do Career –A series of related jobs or occupations built on a foundation of interest, knowledge, training and experience

Work and Lifestyle Lifestyle is the way you use your time, energy, and resources Your work can impact: How much time you have to spend with friends and family How much money and energy you have to pursue your activities

Why People Work! To Pay for wants and needs To be around others To make a contribution Self-Fulfillment

World of Work is Changing Changes affect what work is available How do you keep up with changes? –Read newspapers –Magazines –Websites –Watch or listen to news reports –Talk to people in a field that interests you and ask questions

The Global Workplace Buying goods and services from other countries is participating in a global economy What items do you use on a daily basis that are produced: –locally? –domestically? –globally?

Economy Refers to the ways in which a group produces, distributes and consumes its goods and services Goods are items that people buy Services are activities done for others for a fee

Global Economy Refers to the ways in which the world’s economies are linked Which jobs are sent abroad? Which jobs will be created because of the changing economy? Which jobs will involve international trade?

Skills for the Global Economy Employers need workers who can do a variety of tasks and who posses a variety of skills What skills may be important in global economy?

Technology in the Workplace As companies increase their use of technology, the number and types of jobs will change.

Outsourcing is when business hire other companies or individuals to produce their service or good.

Telecommuting is when someone works from home or in an office center using technology to perform their job

Team An organized group that has a common goal Team members collaborate to set goals, make decisions, and implement actions Teams allow people to share their skill and ideas

Good team members must: Do their share of the work Have good communication skills Have a positive attitude
