Audience for Session Reading and writing instructors looking for ways to encourage students… to slow down their reading process; to read texts closely at the word, phrase and line level; to draw on textual evidence in their summative and formative writing. Today’s application: ENG 241-DL section (but CS is not limited to lit or online courses) 11/16/2012 VCCS English/ESL Peer Group Meeting Richmond, VA

Goals for Session You will learn how… to set up an account, load texts, prompts, and tags on Classroom Salon; to incorporate Salon into the reading and writing assignments you already use in your face-to-face, hybrid, and distance reading and writing classes; to use Salon in lieu of an anthology in literature classes (such as ENG 241) with readings in the public domain; to use Salon as a supplement or alternative to Blackboard. 11/16/2012 VCCS English/ESL Peer Group Meeting Richmond, VA

Why is CS Important? It’s a viable alternative to using print anthologies (esp. in classes that rely primarily on texts already in the public domain). It flips the classroom in face-to-face classrooms by making annotations visible and public, in advance of class discussion. It creates a textual community in online classes by disrupting and deepening traditional “discussion board post” genres (such as journals, blogs, and reading responses). It serves very well as a site for peer and instructor review of student writing; for that matter, it’s a great space to workshop any piece of writing in progress. It’s completely free to teachers and students. 11/16/2012 VCCS English/ESL Peer Group Meeting Richmond, VA

Testimonials What a unique and wonderful tool for virtual collaboration! I am using it for an MBA course now and plan to use it for an undergrad course later on in the semester - Cory S. Maloney Just a quick note to say that this week we used Classroom Salon for the first time with a reading in my 40+ student course and I was amazed at the level of engagement and participation, and I think we've only scratched the surface of possibilities. I'm very excited to see what more we can do with it. Thank you so much for letting us try it out! - Eliana Colunga Wow your product is amazing; I am an educational technology director at a local school district and will begin using it with a few teachers that are flipping their classroom - Megan Cicconi I'm convinced in just four days of use with my distance students, none of whom I've even met in person, that this weekend will be a much more connected experience for them than any live classroom discussion than any previous distance ed experience. Salon turns distance learning into connected learning. - Miles McCrimmon 11/16/2012 VCCS English/ESL Peer Group Meeting Richmond, VA
