Guiding Questions Do you think that Sonia and her neighbors did the right thing in keeping the animal control officer from doing his job? Who do you think is the hero in this story? Give reasons for your answer. How does Sonia’s community change because of the two days the deer are in the neighborhood? Choose a topic to write about. Use the graph on the following slide and cite the text to justify your answer. Use the secret recipe to respond to one of the questions.

Who was talking to Whom? Where When What did they say? “Quote” Explain Quote Here… Analysis This shows….. Because Clearly, should This Proves…. would Obviosly, could It seems... might This suggests… Evidently It appears… Clearly If…then… Obviously Fiction Nonfiction

Example Sonia’s community changed in many ways because of the two deer. One of the changes is shown among the people. After the deer first arrive and Sonia goes outside she says, “I noticed that even neighbors who were almost strangers were standing close to each other and whispering in a friendly way.” Here the author shows not all of the neighbors knew one another and perhaps they were not friendly. Because of their interest in the deer, the neighbors draw closer together and share a common experience and concern which seems to build friendships.

Additional Extensions You may want to choose one of the extension activities on the following slides to focus on additional skills or to help students make connections.

Unexpected Animals Expressive PEN Writing Connection When Sonia wakes up and finds deer in her garden, she’s surprised. Deer are not usually found in the city. Write a paragraph about a time when an animal surprised you. Before you begin, write notes about… Where the animal appeared and what it was doing Why it surprised you and what happened next.

In My Judgment What kinds of problems can animals cause for people? How can those problems be solved? Talk about these questions with a group of classmates. Take notes on the discussion. Then, on your own, complete a chart like the one on the next slide. Choose a Problem and a solution to judge. List the pros and cons. Answer these questions: Is this the right decision? Why or why not?

Problem: Solution: Pros:Cons: Is this the right decision: Why or Why Not?

Animals Matter Thanks to Sonia and her neighbors, the deer made it safely to their new home. Make a poster that encourages people to help protect animals. Think about… What animals need help where you live and why What kind of help they need What people can do to help Create a colorful picture that shows the problem and a solution. Write a few sentences that tell people what you want them to do.

White-Tailed Deer Mr. Benny says the deer in the garden are white-tailed deer. Do research to learn more about this kind of deer. Find answers to these questions: What do they eat? Where do they live? What do they need in addition to food? Pick one topic and write a paragraph about white-tailed deer. Be sure to start with a topic sentence and support it with details.

Dear Diary Imagine that Sonia has been keeping a diary. What do you think she would write at the end of the first day? At the end of the second day? Write an entry for each day. Before writing, think about what Sonia sees, feels, and thinks.

Working With Animals In Two Days in May, Mr. Donovan calls the animal control officer. Later, Mr. Benny calls the wildlife rescuer. In both of these jobs people work with animals. Get together with a group of classmates. List other jobs in which people work with animals. Talk about each job. What do the people you listed do? On your own, chose one of the jobs and write a paragraph about it. Tell whether you would like to do that work and why.
