What do we NOT do? Greening the Campus Research Teaching & learning Enterprise

Action planning – you get to be the Environment Team!

Travel – the story so far…

Before we started… There had been a staff survey of attitudes and behaviours and everyone was unhappy There was no rationalisation regarding which members of staff got a car parking permit Very tight for space on main campus Cyclists and walkers not encouraged No incentives to use public transport Estates were struggling to get planning permission without a travel plan…

Everyone was unhappy Even Arnie!

What did we do… Wrote a justification for a Sustainable Travel Officer - needed lots of approvals from within the organisation Recruited Sandra who had worked in travel and health promotions in the NHS

What next… Set up STIG – the Sustainable Travel Implementation Group with representatives from across the university including HR, Unions, all colleges, RACS, chaired by PVC. Recruited travel plan consultants to help us produce an appropriate staff and student survey Achieved over 70% return from staff and c.7% from students on the survey

GIS images: staff

What then… Analysed the data to show where people travelled from and regular travel times Produced a draft 5-year Travel Plan (written by Sandra with support from consultants on GIS mapping) Had a consultation period with staff, students and Unions on the draft plan Consulted with STIG throughout Finalised plan, got approval and published it in 2009.

And then what? Started implementing Year 1 action plan: –Updated the car parking permit system – introduced new charging system, built flexibility into the system –Started work on quick wins: Website set-up with guidance Negotiated discounts Set up ‘Cycle to Work’ Scheme Advertised walking and cycling options – staff and student travel options booklets Improvements to existing cycle parking

After Year 1 Submitted first annual monitoring report to Leicester City Council (LCC) Negotiated a reduction target of 15% of single occupancy vehicles onsite by 2015 (with LCC) By end of 2010/11, a 4% reduction had been achieved (as demonstrated through snapshot surveying) By end of 2011/12, a further 7% reduction had been achieved (according to Nov 2012 survey)

This happened…

Then this happened…

What does the future hold? Still trying to improve facilities onsite and encourage more uptake of sustainable travel options e.g. bike hire scheme Working with partner organisations (DMU, NHS, local Colleges) to improve public transport linkages
