14 Purpose of the Tejas Star Book Award To promote reading For readers to discover the cognitive and economic benefits of bilingualism and multilingualism in a global community

15 Why? Books are portals to the universe as well as reflections of character and soul Children engage in literature and read more when they see themselves positively portrayed in stories

16 ELA/Reading TEKS Grade 3 - Ch. 110.5.J.(3.13) Reading/culture. The student reads or listens to increase knowledge of his/her own culture, the culture of others, and the common elements of cultures. The student is expected to: (A) connect his/her own experiences with the life experiences, language, customs, and culture of others (K-3); and (B) compare experiences of characters across cultures (K-3).
